(back) Subject: RE: [Residence Organs] rebuilding EP chests From: "Dave McClellan" <drmc@speedfactory.net> Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 06:40:38 -0500   "STEVE PITTS" steve.pitts@adtran.com asked about replacement magnets for = old EP chests.   I have about 130 of these magnets as described by Steve removed from a = circa 1910 Mudler Hunter organ with E. P. ventil chests. Anyone interested is welcome to them. However, they are HEAVY in any significant quantity so shipping costs may be an issue.   I have also mentioned on this list previously that I have several hundred lengths of CAT 3 25-pair pigtail cables with a male 50-pin connector on = one end. Lengths are about 20 feet. I used these to rewire my chest and console (see http://www.mcclellans.com/pipeorgan.htm). I have no more cables left with female connectors, but a female-female adapter socket is available from Graybar for about $6. If anyone would like some, let me know. They are free, but again, these things are HEAVY! It may make more financial sense to buy them LOCALLY as needed. Richard Schneider also has = a source for custom-made cables with connectors.   Dave McClellan

(back) Subject: RE: better description (I hope) of EP magnet assy's From: "STEVE PITTS" <steve.pitts@adtran.com> Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 08:44:03 -0600   There are two types of EP magnet assemblies on my windchests. As I = mentioned before these are very old, probably made in 1910 or 1920.There are all connected with that typical dull grey cloth insulated wire. Both types have = a plate on the bottom of the chest associated with each magnet. These plates are rectangular, most are about 1.5" long by 3/4" wide. One type has a = round hole about 3/8" diameter in the middle of the cover plate. The other type cover plate has a small square metal "lid" (which is about 5/8" on a side = ), in the middle of the cover plate, held in place by two little swing arms.Inside the cover plate is a small metal disk held in place by a wire loop.I found that by removing two screws on the cover plate , I was able = to pull out the u-shapped magnet assembly from a tightly fitting hole in the chest. The u-shapped magnets have wire coils on each leg of the U covered with some black insulating fabric.   It may still be hard to identify what I am talking about...I am going to remove one of each this evening and give a better discription. If any one = has some of those I would love to get some as replacements) .......Dave McClellan- sounds like you might have a match....I probably dont need the entire lot...maybe just 20 or 30.I would be glad to pay you for the trouble......           > ----Original Message----- > From: John Vanderlee [SMTP:jovanderlee@vassar.edu] > Sent: Tuesday, February 13, 2001 4:12 PM > To: Residence Organ List > Cc: strang9@gateway.net; RMStrang@gateway.net > Subject: Re: [Residence Organs] RE: [Residence Organs] rebuilding EP > chests > > >Is it possible to find replacement magnets for old EP chests? The chests = I > >have that need to be re-built are 1920s vintage each magnet has a > >rectangular bracket on the outside of the chest with a small square = metal > >piece held in place by some little swing arms.....
