(back) Subject: Extreme Homes From: "Tim Rickman" <tim@uniflex.com> Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 02:48:14 -0800   This is a multi-part message in MIME format.   ------=3D_NextPart_000_000B_01C19337.EC628B10 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable   Hi ALL   Tim Rickman here, the guy who has supplied all the relay systems, =3D console rebuild and wiring for that Malloof "Extreme Home" Installation.   Geez, I missed that segment again! I've never seen it, BUT, as an =3D update, the situation has gotten even MORE EXTREME. =3D20   Another 4 manual 27 rank Wurlitzer has been added to a newly extended =3D wing of the music room. Another 5,000 sq. feet has been added to the house bringing = =3D the Music room up to about \ 10,000 sq. feet; divided into two separate rooms; the Barton room and =3D the Wurlitzer room.   Both Organs will be playable at the same time, as the rooms can be =3D closed off from each other. I guess for=3D20 those who prefer the Barton sound, they can listen in one room and the =3D Wurlitzer fans can listen in the other. OR open up all the doors and have two organists to battle it out. Or =3D one organist can record on one organ and duet himself on the other organ. Geez, when you have TWO huge =3D pipeorgans in your home, I guess you can=3D20 do just about anything you want. It really is EXTREME.   Both rooms have a barrel ceiling with a vertical rise of about 28 feet. = =3D Each Organ room is 50 across by 60 feet=3D20 deep. Each room also has a balcony but the Barton Room has balcony =3D theatre type seating up at swell=3D20 shade level but back about 45 feet from the chambers. Those are the =3D best seats in the house. The Barton=3D20 "organ" is a mix of Mostly Barton, with Wurlitzer, Morton and Trivo =3D pipework mixed in. There is an 8 rank=3D20 classical gallery division (11Ranks if you count the three rank mixture) = =3D on the west side of the room, and=3D20 there are two blowers, 10 HP and 15 HP for all 48 ranks of pipes. The =3D newly installed Sheridan organ is also=3D20 a "Heinz 57" pipework organ, Mostly Wurlitzer with one 15HP Blower =3D located in the basement. Both Organs=3D20 use the UniFlex 2000 PC Controlled relay system built and installed by =3D my company, Rickman Control=3D20 Systems right here in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Barton Stadium organ has =3D been used as our software test-site=3D20 organ for about 4 years.   If you want to see the Barton Stadium console and INSIDE the console =3D close up, you can go to=3D20 www.theatreorgans.com/Barton/ and see my story, written about 3-4 years = =3D ago when the rebuild and=3D20 installation was done. A lot of things about the house and the room =3D have changed since then, but the organ=3D20 remains essentially the same.   The new 4m 27 rank Sheridan Wurlitzer should be on line and playing by =3D the end of February. Then it will be=3D20 time for another party. It seems every time something new gets added to = =3D (now) one of the organs, it's a good=3D20 enough reason to throw a party. Somewhere between 200 and 300 people =3D will stop by through out the night.=3D20 Locals and Celebes alike. That's how the Extreme TV people found the =3D place, they ended up at one of Phil's=3D20 parties. Some one said: "Hey, you've GOT to see this guy Phil Maloof's = =3D house" You would be surprised who=3D20 has shown up at some of Phils Parties. They're lots of fun!   The REALLY GOOD news to all of this is there is NO MORE room on the lot = =3D to expand this house any further,=3D20 so this is IT for this EXTREME home installation. Believe me, all you =3D organ wacko's who think it would be=3D20 really GREAT, to have TWO Pipe Organs in you home..... it AIN'T. The =3D EXTREME cost of keeping=3D20 these "beasts" at a constant temperature 365 days a year where the =3D temperature pops up to 120 degrees=3D20 almost every day in the summer and down to 0 degrees in the winter, PLUS = =3D the EXTREME cost of running 40=3D20 horse power worth of blowers is NOT by any means cheap. Electric rates = =3D have doubled here this last year=3D20 because of the Political ENERGY Crisis of California, right "next door" = =3D and Maintenance and tuning costs are=3D20 also EXTREME for these instruments, as Both instruments have exposed =3D "Gallery divisions". I don't know=3D20 what it costs Phil to maintain these instruments, but I know what it =3D costs to heat and cool my house, ($400 to=3D20 $600 bucks a month) without a pipe organ. Phils 15,000 Sq foot house =3D is EXTREME in MANY ways. It's a=3D20 great place to see, but be glad you're not paying the bills.=3D20   Regards   Tim Rickman   ------=3D_NextPart_000_000B_01C19337.EC628B10 Content-Type: text/html; charset=3D"Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable   <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D3D"text/html; (back) Subject: Year of the Organ From: "Dave Milton" <dmilton@igs.net> Date: Wed, 02 Jan 2002 08:53:01 -0500   Making progress with the installation of 3 ranks + Bourdons in our current location. Over the holidays I have got the winding connected and qute a bit of the wiring done so can now have some of the pipes playing on this setup. This is a "MIDI' setup, so manuals & pedals will be connected later, right now MIDI streams from computer / electronic keyboards that I have. Working well with the Midi driver cards that I got from JW Electronics in UK. The pipes may also be accompanied by an Ahlborn 201 unit as well.   Also now have foundations poured for the new house which will eventually house a 7 to 9 rank organ, largely salavaged and restored from an 1893 Peter organ built in NB, Canada. The Bourdons that I have playing now are from that organ.   I will update my webpage one of the days as well - have been a bit too busy enjoying the pipes playing to work on web pages.   Cheers & Happy New Year, Dave Milton     http://207.236.55.58/users/dmilton/PipeWorks/Organ_1.html
(back) Subject: Re: [Residence Organs] Extreme Homes From: "Kelvin Smith" <KelvinSmith@UntraveledRoad.com> Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 12:42:41 -0700   Hi all,   Sorry I have to comment on extreme homes. My home is not as extreme as the previous one described. The organ room is only 20x50 and 30 tall. The = organ is only ~35 ranks (although I aspire to have 100). I want to point out a couple of things about it. The heat for my house (3000 sq feet) is not significantly more than a typical house around here, which I think is largely due to plenty of insulation. The other things is that the 5 hp blower does not draw enough current that I can detect it in my electrical consumption. I worried that maybe it would be expensive to operate, but it is not in the least. It has the capicity to draw a lot of current, but = most of the time it is nearly idling.   Kelvin
