(back) Subject: painting metal pipes - question From: "H Chase" <wa1vvh@net1plus.com> Date: Sun, 25 May 2003 20:30:15 -0700     I would like to know if tin/lead pipes can be painted. Is there any special paint I should use so that it doesnt flake or fall off after a = time? Are there any issues concerning effects on the sound? I have a rank of pipes that will be standing exposed in the living room, and would like to do some highliting on them. Hasd anyone on the list done = this, and what did you use? Thanks!     Harry Chase

I used a metallic chrome = spray paint on them and they looked like polished tin. It was amazing and I couldn't believe the results. They looked just like most facade pipes. = It exceeded my expectations. The trick was to clean the pipes first with a degreaser and make sure the ambient temperature and the spray paint was about 75F. You do, however, have to be very careful around the mouths of the smaller pipes as the paint could potentially clog up the windway = and/or nicking. I don't believe the paint affected the tone of the pipes at all.   Another paint effect I saw done on 8' facade pipes was a spray-on silver = or light gray "Hammerite" paint. It gives the look of hammered metal. It doesn't look good from 4' up so I'd only recommend it on 16' or 8' pipes. This paint is available at any hardware store. It also is available in a brush-on paint as well. I hope this information helps or gives you some ideas.   Steven Durham Portland, OR   ----- Original Message ----- From: "H Chase" <wa1vvh@net1plus.com> To: "Residence Organ List" <DIYAPASON-L@pipechat.org> Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2003 8:30 PM Subject: [Residence Organs] painting metal pipes - question     > > I would like to know if tin/lead pipes can be painted.
