Christ Church organ

(back) Subject: Christ Church organ From: "Jon Fick" <jon@VermontFicks.org> Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2004 08:25:09 -0400   Devon,   I took a look at the article and immediately noticed the fact that you are at Christ Church of Oakbrook.   I visited there with my father one Sunday morning 25 years ago and aside from the main sanctuary and it's organ, I was struck by three things: 1) the evening chapel was huge and had it's own pipe organ 2) it had a Communion table that was in fact a carpenter's workbench 3) after the Sunday service the tower bells pealed a random chorus   I went home (NYS at the time,) and immediately rigged up a chorus circuit board for my own churches electronic carillon system which for years = played by schedule every Sunday after the morning service.   I grew up in proximity to a 9R2M pipe organ at my church (my father was = the organist) in which the wiring was gray cloth-covered and old, the ducts = were all metal and soldered, and the organ was completely hidden behind swell shades. That was my concept of a pipe organ. Visiting Christ Church and seeing for the first time (up close, at least) the exposed organ in the evening chapel was an eye-opener for me. It's wiring had obviously = gleaned from telephone technology (66 blocks, and such) and the ducts were mostly flexduct. It got me to thinking. Some years later I bought an old organ and installed it in our house. More recently I did the same thing in our church. All in the same fashion.   And, I've used the illustration of the carpenter's workbench more than = once since that visit.   I've always wanted to drop by Christ Church again, but haven't had the opportunity...yet. The article brought back some nice memories.
