The story is about the recent church fire with possible blower room origins and a backdraft, which was discussed on Pipechat.   --Tim   At 07:41 AM 2/23/2004 -0600, you wrote: >At 10:25 PM 2/22/04, you wrote: >>http://www.rrstar.com/localnews/your_community/regional/ = 20040220-13174.shtml > > >Unable to access this link...could you elaborate on what the story is = about..

(back) Subject: RE: [Residence Organs] Dangerous Organs From: "Kilgen" <kilgen@wi.rr.com> Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 18:58:35 -0600   Embers likely caused St. John's explosion   By MELISSA WESTPHAL, Rockford Register Star >> Click here for more about Melissa     SYCAMORE - Burning embers from a pipe organ fire likely caused the = explosion that destroyed the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John last Monday.   Investigators released their findings Thursday, noting the fire produced = the largest backdraft explosion on record. The blast injured two firefighters, one of whom is expected to return to duty in March.   The devastating fire displaced congregation members, who celebrated = services at Sycamore High School Sunday. Between 60 and 70 firefighters battled the blaze for four hours.   Sycamore Fire Chief Bill Riddle said his crew responded to a fire in the church's basement the morning of Feb. 8. Firefighters extinguished a fire surrounding the pipe organ motor and blower assembly in a basement crawl space.   Flames burned a frame around the mechanism, charred some floor beams and sent smoke throughout the church. Investigators visited the building = Monday and deemed the area secure.   The last person left the building at 4:15 p.m. Less than 45 minutes later, = a 911 call reported smoke coming from the church.   Debris from an explosive backdraft pushed firefighters back and injured = the two men. A backdraft occurs inside a building when oxygen inside a room is almost used up. Then, flames sink, and the room fills with smoke.   When oxygen is reintroduced, such as through an open door or window, the fire sucks in oxygen so hard that fire gases explode.   "It's the largest anyone has seen in the country," Riddle said. "Just the fact that it blew the roof off with such violence. You don't see that a = lot in fires."   Riddle believes a piece of burning ember lodged inside a wall near the initial fire and went undetected. He said officials did all they could to secure the site. Embers have been found to smolder up to 30 days.   "You can't take a chain saw and cut up someone's building," Riddle said.   Riddle expects to finalize fire reports next week. The property has been turned over to insurance carriers, who make the final call on demolition.     There!   -----Original Message----- From: DIYAPASON-L@pipechat.org [mailto:DIYAPASON-L@pipechat.org]On = Behalf Of GRSCoLVR@aol.com Sent: Monday, February 23, 2004 4:04 PM To: DIYAPASON-L@pipechat.org Subject: Re: [Residence Organs] Dangerous Organs     In a message dated 2/23/2004 1:11:04 PM Eastern Standard Time, blainericketts@comcast.net writes:       http://www.rrstar.com/localnews/your_community/regional/20040220-13174.shtm= l >             still does not work,,,says page is no longer available. \ ---Roc
