(back) Subject: New List-Server Instructions! VERY IMPORTANT! From: PipeChat-Admin <admin@pipechat.org> Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 13:27:26 -0500 Content-Type: text/enriched; charset="us-ascii"   Hi Everyone,     The new server is now up and running and some changes have occurred in procedures for the new software. <underline>Please read this email carefully and keep it for future reference</underline>, particularly in relation to the NoMail, Digest and Subscribe/Unsubscribe commands and the list addresses.     The most major change in the subscribe/unsubscribe procedure is that the "Listproc" address no longer exists. The new address is:     PipeChat-Requests <<requests@pipechat.org>     Any email sent to the "Listproc" address will receive a note saying please send mail to the correct address. The "Admin" and "List" addresses still remain the same:     PipeChat <<pipechat@pipechat.org>   PipeChat-Admin <<admin@pipechat.org>     Our thanks to David for making all this happen for us. Please be aware, as Shirley has already mentioned to you, that there may be interruptions to our service over the next few days. You may experience bounced mail, if so, please just keep on trying to resend it. If you continue to have trouble beyond a few days, please email me at my personal account mailto:pgpocock@ix.netcom.com and I will see what we can do about it.     Thanks for your patience and participation in PipeChat.     Pete     Dr. Peter G. Pocock   PipeChat Administrator and Co-Owner       ===========================================   LIST ADMINISTRATION, GUIDELINES and ETIQUETTE   ===========================================   ================   ADMINISTRATION:   ================     To "Subscribe" to PipeChat-L send email to:     requests@pipechat.org     saying:     Subscribe PipeChat     To "Subscribe" to "PipeChat DIGEST" send email to:     requests@pipechat.org     saying in the body of the email:     Digest PipeChat     NOTE: You do not need to subscribe to the list first, and then to the Digest, simply subscribe directly to the Digest.     To "Unsubscribe" send email to:     requests@pipechat.org     saying:     Unsubscribe PipeChat     NoMail:     The NoMail command is no longer available. You will need to simply unsubscribe from the list, and then resubscribe when you return.     If you have any administrative questions on the services available from the list please send them to:     admin@pipechat.org     stating your question or problem and we will get back to you within 24 hours.     ======================================================   ETIQUETTE   ======================================================     1. Be kind to one another.     2. Please respect other list members points of view, we are all individuals and entitled to our opinions, that's what makes life interesting :):)     3. One rule applies absolutely -- NO FLAMING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. The list owners will be reading each post and if we see flaming going on you will be warned once. If there is a repeat, you will be removed from the list.     ======================================================   GUIDELINES   ======================================================     1. Have fun. (It's the only polite thing to do here)     2. Make friends. (How do you make friends? Listen to other people. Validate their thoughts and feelings. Be willing to tolerate and accept them as they are. Have fun.)     3. Learn tolerance. Discuss ideas, rather than judging people.     4. Maintain a sense of humor. There's nothing like a good slice of humor for breaking up a flame war.     5. Use lots of smileys and poses. It is difficult to read tone of voice. This helps the humor impaired.     6. If something someone has said upsets you, ask for clarification first without the use of emotional language. They may have been joking or they may even reconsider their comments.     7. If someone on the PipeChat mailing list has written something which distresses you, you can always privately ask Pete or Shirley to pummel some sense into them :) Do not use up mailing list bandwidth doing so yourself.     8. Please do not use up mailing list bandwidth explaining Netiquette to those poor lost newbies. It's not what this list is about. If you must, do so privately.     9. When responding to a message, quote only the relevant bits. No one is going to want to read your message if they have to dredge through miles of previous messages. Besides, it wastes bandwidth.     10. Please keep signatures to around four lines long.     11. Members of this list are allowed to wander off topic provided what they have to say is interesting or humorous.     12. When you send mail to the list the list server processes it immediately. If there are any further delays, we apologize, however, they are out of our control.     13. Please reply generally to the list. However, please consider wether it would be better to reply to the individual rather than the list, thus reducing list traffic.     14. What to post? Anecdotes.... sadnesses.... joys.... Anything you feel comfortable posting. You will soon pick up if the list is going to respond to your topic.     15. Please think twice before posting. For those who are not on Digest form, it is very easy to overlow their mail boxes, please be considerate of others on the list.     16. What not to post! Items that have nothing at all to do with PipeChat and its guidelines--e.g. Virus warnings, Church matters that are not music related or topics that are better dealt with by other lists.. If you feel uncertain as to the content of any email, please send it to the Admin address and we will guide you as to wether we feel it should be posted or not.     17. Finally, this is a place to enjoy yourself, feel relaxed about music, pipe organs, theater organs, church organs, electronic organs and church music. Make the list what you want it to be. And LOTS of HUMOR PLEASE :)         "Pipe Up and Be Heard!"   =======================================================   PipeChat-L--A discussion List re: pipe/digital organs and related topics   Homepage: http://pw2.netcom.com/~pgpocock/PipeChat-L/   List: mailto:pipechat@pipechat.org   Admin: mailto:admin@pipechat.org   =======================================================

And they spoke of the appropriateness, for good and wonderful reasons, for editing. They did not speak of first obtaining the permission of the owner of the copyright of the material.   I too am speaking of denominational hymnals which, when I last checked, are among the worst offenders in terms of editing for fashionably good reasons without obtaining legal approvals. As I said, if your specific denomination has followed the rules, I applaud. Most don't.

(back) Subject: Re: A Nice Surprise From: NFexec@aol.com Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 21:42:00 -0400 (EDT)   Just to add 2 cents regarding Walt's "book" -- I have it and I know Walter. The book is delightful and so is he. His theatre organ registration and style is as close to an orchestral version (for theatre organ) as anyone. If you have an interest in this genre and have an opportunity to book concerts, I'd strongly suggest you contact Mr Strony. You will be glad you did. (This is from an acquaintance - not a business relation!)
(back) Subject: Re: Steinway Rebuilding From: NFexec@aol.com Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 21:52:49 -0400 (EDT)   I cannot speak of Steinway's capability of rebuilding (nor their cost). There is nothing magical about restoring a Steinway if your technician knows what he is doing. I am not an expert piano technician, but I have had much exposure to and have spent some quality time in working with such craftsmen. I hope you know it will not be inexpensive - especially if the cabinet needs refinishing ($9 to 12 grand, easily). I also assume you know that the guts of the instrument are strong or in restorable shape. A complete restoration also depends on whether or not the bushing cloth and pins are replaced in the action along with all other buckskin, cloth, and other organic materials are either replaced or not. Very labor intensive work for anyone to do. Hammers, dampers and whippens are only the beginning. Soundboard, bridge work, tuning block, proper (and I mean 3 times) regulation and much other work is essential. It should be tuned and hammers voiced in your home (or its resting place) after complete regulation is done. I'd call around and get references and price quotes (in writing!) from local technicians/ shops. AND from Steinway - good luck

Is this a change of >some sort? >   Folks   As you are all probably aware Pipechat has been moved to a new listserver. With this there are a couple of changes in the way the list works.   1. The "FROM" no longer shows that it is coming from Pipechat but instead has the name of the person that has sent the mail to the list.   2. The listserver automatically puts in the REPLY TO address when you are responding to a previous post. All you need to do is click on your reply button. Please do not reply using a pipechat address in your address book. Doing so adds the address twice which is causing duplicate postings.   We are going through a bit of a "teething" problem at the current time. The "bugs" should be worked out very quickly but there might be a couple of minor glitches for the next day or so.   Some people may have their posting to PipeChat returned to them. This will straighten itself out shortly once our new routing for mail is propagating among all of the various servers throughout the Net. If you have had a post "bounce" back to you or if you do not see something that you posted within 24 hours, please repost it. The only thing that has happened is that the name server your ISP uses hasn't updated itself as of yet.   If you continue to have problems with posting to the list please contact me directly, DO NOT bother the list with it. I should be able to straighten out whatever the problem is.   Peter, Shirley and I all Thank You for your cooperation during this time of changeover.   David Tech Support and member of PipeChat   ********************************** David Scribner Black Iris Consulting 4775 Balmoral Drive Pensacola, FL 32504-9174 850-478-9635 - Voice 850-476-0711 - Fax david@blackiris.com
