(back) Subject: Do you know about `The Organist' - pub G Schirmer? From: patmai@juno.com (Patricia R. Maimone) Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 10:58:02 -0500   Hello, Pipechatters!..   Would there be any interest in a rather full collection (several boxes..) of back issues of "The Organist" as published by G. Schirmer? I was asked that question today by the brother of a friend, on behalf of their mother, who had been an organist for many years.   I have not seen the collection, nor do I know what the publication included. Any good memories of this particular periodical?   Thanks for your help.   Pat Maimone <patmai@juno.com> at home <yp6867@sunams.usma.army.mil> at work

From: dmjd <jimdave@rnet.com> Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 10:32:47 -0600   Dear Pat and all: Libraries would be my suggestion if no one in particular wants the mags. We donated all of our back issues of TAO, Music and whatever they were calling it that month to the local university library who were especially glad to get them. Some months ago, I needed an article from one and found they had bound them nicely. Made me feel kinda good. Then, they charged me for copying something I had donated in the first place. :-) Jim   -- Rainbow Ridge Farm Plainville Illinois
(back) Subject: Yamaha organ From: JEFF PEDERSON <JW-PEDERSON@worldnet.att.net> Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 14:54:59 -0400   Anyone out there had any experience or comments about the Yamaha AR-100 digital pipe/theater organ. I've been looking at one and it sounds very very real.   Thanks Jeff
(back) Subject: Galanti/Baldwin From: rnickel@itol.com Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 16:09:49 -0600 (CST)   Within the last week I've had the opportunity to hear and play two great digital instruments. One is a church installation ... Galanti with 13 ranks. A little "digital voicing" needed on the upperwork, but a beautiful sound. Yesterday I played a Baldwin (not sure of the number) that will be a home installation for a friend. Very similar sound to the Galanti, and quite enjoyable.   Although I am very proud of my German Baroque mechanical-action instrument, I do get jealous when I play a digital I really like ... knowing that I can't reproduce some of those sounds in my own church.   Just thought you'd want to know ...   Bob Nickel
(back) Subject: Back from Boston (crossposted piporg and pipechat) From: Adam Levin <alevin@advance.net> Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 20:42:26 -0500 (EST)     Well, I've returned from my trip to Boston with some good stuff.   We got there Wednesday evening and didn't do anything organic, so I won't into that.   On Thursday morning we woke up early to take the T into Boston -- we had to get to the Mother Church of Christ, Scientist by 9:45 to catch the prelude. I had never been to the Church, which unfortunately was mostly closed for the holiday. The organ is really impressive right up over the podium -- wow. The sound was wonderful, although is seems like the acoustics of the auditorium aren't great. The prelude consisted of the first movement of Bach's A minor concerto and then Largo (Handel? Haydn? I can't remember now). The first hymn was Now Thank We All Our God.   Unfortunately, around there they asked us to leave. My daughter was babbling a bit, as 2 year olds are wont to do, and this apparently disturbed them. I was quite disappointed, but I also didn't want to disturb the solo coming up, so we left without hearing the postlude.   That was all of the organic stuff for Thursday.   Friday was the big day, though. Judy Ollikkala came from Worcester (well, Fitchburg, actually) and picked us up at the motel. We took the T into Copley square. First we wandered through the FestivalOrgan exhibit at the Boston Public Library. Go see it if you can. Not only is there some great information on the history and construction of the organ (including models, cross-sections and mock-ups), but there's a hands-on exhibit. They have a one-octave three rank tracker in a clear box set up so that you can see all of the slider chest and tracker mechanisms work. Then they have a huge box with dozens of different types of pipes (trumpet, cornet, diapason, gemshorn, flute) -- you hit a button to hear the different sounds. Another box compares principles of different metals. There's a small display showing how electric key and stop action with 16', 4' and unison off couplers work. Then, there's a comparison of electro-pneumatic vs. tracker -- two keys in a clear box showing how the two mechanisms work so you can compare how they feel. Oh, and I guess I should mention the bellows hooked to the Casavant CCC 16' double open wood pipe that rumbles away in the corner! Wow. :)   After the exhibit we wandered across the street to look at the organ in the Old South Church. No one was there, though, so we couldn't hear it and we certainly couldn't play it, but what a beautiful building.   We topped off our Boston segment at the 12:15 Trinity Church concert. Stuart Forster from down under (now in the U.S., though) played a wonderful concert: Allegro Appassionato from Sonata No. 1 in C# min -- Basil Harwood Andante con moto en sol mineur -- Alexandre Pierre Francois Boely Imperial March -- Edward Elgar Fantasia super Komm, Heiliger Geist -- J.S. Bach Final from Symphonie III -- Louis Vierne   What a wonderful instrument! American as apple pie. We sat in the back in case my daughter acted up a bit. The last few pews are raised on a wood step, and boy did it shake with the bass! Definitely worth the trip, and Mr. Forster did an incredible job.   After Trinity was lunch at a Thai restaurant near Boston University and then off to Worcester. We were going to stop by Judy's church in Southboro, but we didn't have the time. Instead we went right to St. Joseph's church in Worcester where she was having a small concert the following night. They're a French-Canadian church with a 28 rank (or was it 38?) Casavant 3 manual. A friend of hers has the key and let us in, locking the door behind us :). Judy went through her program, mostly accompaniment, with my wife singing the Phantom pieces :). Then I got to tootle around. Most of what I know is baroque (Bach, Handel and Pachelbel), but the organ held its own even with only one mixture (a three rank). With the proper coupling between the divisions, it sounded quite good, and the 16' bourdon rumbled just like at the exhibit at the library! Unfortunately, the Voix Humaine was recently redone and hasn't been voiced yet, so it was unplayable. It's one of those "left hander pedal" organs -- my teacher teaches on the 1929 Estey at his Lutheran church which has stop tabs over the top manual instead of stop knobs. For the pedal, the only really usable registration is to take your left hand and whap the entire division on :). The church is wonderfully resonant, though, and it was very exciting to play in such a large space on a wonderful-sounding instrument. We even got a taste of Mr. Lampert's nemesis when Judy hit the trems and played some theatre selections :) :) :)!   After that, it was over to Judy's house for a quick look at her pump organ -- she found it in a barn (a well-kept barn) and picked it up cheap. It's got 2 1/2 ranks -- diapason treble and bass, principle 4 full compass and half-rank dulciana. One manual and a pump pedal. It's actually in quite good condition considering its age -- 1828 I think it was. She let me play it -- what fun! A few small leaks and one or two ciphers, but overall a rather nice sound.   As a souvenir Judy gave me a broken Casavant pipe -- a wooden 8' bourdon, C# -- about 14" not including the bottom tube (don't know the technical name, but it's about 6" long -- that's the part that had broken off). I fit it together like a puzzle piece, and with a little wood glue it's as good as new and actually in tune. So, I've officially started my home organ project with one pipe! Hey, Judy, if you've got any more broken pipes, I'll be glad to glue 'em up! :)   After dinner at a Japanese restaurant near her home, she drove us back to the motel.   Overall, both my wife and I (and, I daresay, my daughter) had a wonderful time. We really got a taste of some nifty organs, and I plan on catching more next time we go up there (probably around Christmas). I'll definitely be joining Judy for some of her organ crawls next year.   I hope everyone else has had a good holiday break and weekend on all sides of the globe.   Keep piping!   Take care, -Adam Rutherford, NJ USA Free speech online! _/ "Do you know, humans think the http://zen.advance.net/~alevin/________/ world was made by a sort of big <*> __________________________/ human?" I can't say for certain, but I believe it was around 1993. I tried to look it up again today, but I have refiled those old issues (i.e. they are in a box in a closet).   If I come across their advertisement again, I will post their address.   The only way I could find it now would be to start with January 1993's issue and search page by page through December's issue. =   And hope that 1993 was the right year. An advertisers index in TAO would help.   Kurt Kehler
