I'm almost dismayed that the Southern Baptists don't have more during Holy Week. Since this is the week of trial for our Lord and Savior. This is the week of shed blood, of grief, anguish. Seems when ever I turn on the t.v. and there's a SB church program on, the speaker is always talking about "shed blood" for our sins...... I would think that this would be a very important week in the SB church. I guess I'm just not familiar with the SB church.   Jon Bertschinger   Daryl Robinson wrote:   > Oh sorry I am the organist for a Southern Baptist church and we don't > have quite as many festivities as most I think. > > Daryl > > >From: David Scribner <david@blackiris.com> > >Reply-To: "PipeChat" <pipechat@pipechat.org> > >To: "PipeChat" <pipechat@pipechat.org> > >Subject: Re: list........... > >Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 08:20:49 -0600 > > > >>I have noticed that the list has been slowing down considerbley the > past > >>few days. From: cremona84000@webtv.net (bruce cornely) Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 12:05:53 -0500 (EST)   In defense of the Southern Baptists, they do not limit the importance of Jesus death and sacrifice to Holy Week. The cross, salvation, sacrifice, and atonement, and resurrection are integral to daily life for Southern Baptists. What grieves me is seen this start to be pushed aside as some churches try to incorporate liturgical year observances into their worship. The Southern Baptists have alot more going for them than many people realized or are willing to admit. They are one of the few denominations which still have denominational integrity.   bruce cornely cremona84000@webtv.net   Embrasse mon chien sur la bouche! --from a sweatshirt (in preparation for OHS Montreal)

"Well, they like to do their own thing." The church sponsors and aids them by building them their very own church (so they won't cross over and come to 1st Bap). They like things their way; they can clap and sway, etc. I found it to be very racist. Stay on your own side of the tracks, and, by Golly, I'll build you your very own church. I think Criswell (there, the name finally came to me) did this as well. Just meandering in thought. ... These types of discussions are endless and will never be resolved in the list forum. Unfortunately they also have the negative result of causing hurt feelings, and folks leaving the list fellowship at a time when EVERYONE is needed. How about focusing on the ORGAN music of the season and leaving the denoms out of it?   Thanks and best wishes, Bob Acker Allen, TX
(back) Subject: Easter From: Innkawgneeto@webtv.net (N Brown) Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 21:27:46 -0500 (EST)   Dear Friends, The director of Christian Ed and Youth at my church asked me a question I did not have an answer for, nor could I bluff my way into creating one. And, I thought perhaps some of you all will know the answer, or atleast lead me in the direction of finding it. Why is Easter called Easter? We're speaking mostly of the word "easter" itself. Where does it come from? Other languages use terms referring to flowers, the paschal lamb, etc. Any insights will be greatly appreciated.   Thanks, Neil Brown Barnegat, NJ USA
(back) Subject: Re: list........... From: Innkawgneeto@webtv.net (N Brown) Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 21:37:53 -0500 (EST)   Dear Jon, As one who grew up Southern Baptist, I can say that many churches are beginning to discover the beauty in Holy week celebrations. And, may I say, they are discovering Christmas Eve as well. I now work fulltime in a United Methodist Church, for which I am grateful. We have just enough to provide meaning and beauty, but not so many services that I'm dead tired by Easter. Actually, in my church, Easter is less stressful than Palm Sunday. I have more services, but only 1 choir to deal with. Since they basically know what they are doing, I can focus on my annual Widor presentation. Sorry, folks, for the rambling. Neil
(back) Subject: Easter From: prswank@impop.bellatlantic.net Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1999 21:50:22 -0500   Tradition holds that the word, "Easter" was taken from the old Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring, "Eastre", in whose honor an annual spring festival was held around the same time that Easter was celebrated. It wasn't until the eighth century thsat the name Easter was taken from the pagan festivals and given a true Christian meaning, in celebration of the resurrection of Christ. The Catholic Encyclopedia states: the word Easter, which comes from the Anglo-Saxon, is a term derived from the pagan goddess of the dawn. The Latin variation, Pascha, is from Hebredw antecedents; it is derived from the Passover, or their freedom from the Egyptians.
