(back) Subject: VIRUS WARNING #2 From: David Scribner <david@blackiris.com> Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 18:21:11 -0600   Not everyone will receive the happy99 virus but please double check to see if it was sent to you.   I stopped the server and went in manually and removed it from the outgoing queue so some of you will not receive it and those of you on the digest will not receive it as I have removed it from the digest.   This actually is not a virus but a Trojan Horse and it has the means to slip past the server. I'm sorry for the notes but I don't want anyone else's computer to be affected. I have also set Larry to NON POST until I am sure his machine is clean again.   David

(back) Subject: AN UPDATE Re: VIRUS WARNING #2 From: Administrator <admin@pipechat.org> Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 21:55:57 -0600   Just an update on the situation.   One of our fellow list members has sent me a "fix" for the Happy99 "virus" that I have forwarded on to the person that sent the original offending file. Hopefully, it will solve his problem and he will be able to join us once again.   Since this afternoon, I have been in contact with the developers of the List Serv software. There is a file within the server that is used to reject various types of mails like Bounced Mail messges or undeliverable mail messages from getting sent to the list. The developer was able to give me a string to add to that file that should reject the Happy99 file from getting through in the future. Now, I'm not about to try to test it by finding a copy of Happy99 and trying to send it so i will just have to go on faith that it will work. But hopefully, this will be the last time that we have this problem on this list.   The BEST protection that any of you can have is to NEVER EVER open (run) a file that is sent to you unless you KNOW exactly what it is and you know WHO you are getting it from. Unfortunately, there are people out there who don't have a life and don't have anything better to do than to work on creating stuff like this Happy99 virus to make life difficult for the rest of us. I'm afraid that we are going to see more stuff like this Happy99 appearing in the future. And I feel sorry for those folks that have to be so destructive to create these viruses.   I am just glad that I happened to be at the computer this afternoon and was able to catch this as fast as I did. And I'm sorry to have had to do all these postings but this should be the end of them.   And now back to our regularly scheduled chatting.   David **************************************** David Scribner Co-Owner / Technical Administrator PipeChat   850-478-9635 mailto:david@blackiris.com
