(back) Subject: RE: Benaroya Hall organ (tracker) -- basically good for firewood! From: <Wurlibird1@aol.com> Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 22:43:10 EST   Hi to all,   My knowledge of the subject organ here is nil, therefore no comment except =   that any organ worth saving should be saved. This one may not be. There = are a few out there which could be served by a merciful death and sound as = though they were in the throes of same when played.   As a fairly new member of this list, I chose to read the archives. It is amazing how often the tracker/other action war has been waged. Despite = the battles, despite the wars, there seems to be no winner in any skirmish. = None hoped for here, either.   I do not like trackers because my experience with them (four) have all = been poor. In each case, the organs were poorly regulated, noisy, and needed major work. Of course, this is an indictment of the owner/curator more = than the organ, but I was not called upon to play the owner/curator. My experience with electrified actions has been much more pleasant and considerably more numerous. Some even had "tracker touch" (my, how novel = and at an added cost) which was tolerated.   Conversely, I hold in great respect the opinions of those who hold the tracker action to be virtually deified. That respect shall remain = weighted in their favor until their opinion suggests that organs cannot further = evolve and that the invention of the bellcrank signified the eternal end of organ =   technological advancement. It not only can advance further, but if = allowed to do so, may make the instrument more serviceable over a longer period of =   time.   Comments within this thread mentioned the Meyerson Fisk and its = accommodation with orchestra and symphony. Due to my close proximity to Dallas, I have heard the organ four times. My lasting opinion is that I heard it thrice = too often. Opinions will vary but I know for a fact that Dallas has better organs in several venues. It is my opinion that the organist would find a =   better blend with a more intimate console placement with respect to the symphony. The Fisk's crow's nest placement makes that an impossibility, action type notwithstanding. I could not determine if the program(s) was/were ORGAN with symphony - or SYMPHONY with organ. They seemed to = fight each other. Even in solo concert, my impressions were that it was loud, coarse, and lacking in many respects.   Oh, well, just my thoughts. Advancing years breeds intolerance but intemperance is a viable therapy.   Happy nog.   Jim
