Where I am now they = usually quieten down about 3 minutes before time, plus the Rector usually starts = the service as much as 5 minutes late. I view people visiting as a positive aspect of church life. Although it is, I admit, a problem for those of us who would like a totally meditative atmosphere.   Randy Terry

Sometimes the noise beforehand is a little unsettling. But regularly, congregation members come up into the choir loft and sit listening to the postlude. (back) Subject: Organ in St. Peter's Episcopal Redwood City, CA From: "Randy Terry" <randyterry@laumc.org> Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 10:51:31 -0700   The best stop in our organ is the room! We have 3-4 second reverberation. Even the ceiling is poured concrete and is sealed and reflective. The fl= oor is hard waxed cork (except for a center isle runner.)   It was installed by Swain & Kates in 1972. They are a San Francisco Comp= any that did a lot of work in this area. There are currently 13 ranks - A Principal chorus of 8, 4, (unit 2) and a IV Mixture. The 2 Unison Princip= al ranks are exposed. Everything else is enclosed. This includes 16' Subbass/Koppelflote, 16' Quintadena, 2-2/3 Rohr Nasard, 1-3/5 Tierce, and= a Gemshorn and Celeste. The flue pipes were made in Germany by Laukhauff, = and in Holland by Stinkens. There is a wonderful English Trumpet (16,8,4) ma= de in this country but the records don't show which supply house. Windchest= s and reservoirs are Organ Supply EP, and the console is Klann (will be replaced soon!)   We are changing the pipework by revoicing the low 12 notes of the Quintad= ena to a soft Gededckt, adding pipes for the 8' octave and 7 new chimney flut= es, and moving the Rohr Nasard to become an 8' Rohrflute. We will replace th= e Nasard with new conical spotted metal pipes. We are adding a soft 8' Woo= d Principal made out of a revoiced Clarabella, and we are adding a 1964 Stinkens Oboe which has never been in an organ before so is in great shap= e. We will re-regulate (we may rescale/revoice as well) everything as needed. Basically the organ is voiced in the Aeolian Skinner style, rather than t= he more standard neo-baroque of the early 70's, so I am very happy. The updated stoplist follows, and further changes will be made when we gut th= e Klann console and install a solid state relay and combination action. Th= e (current) builder is Paul Sahlin of Burlingame, who will do everything in the chamber and do the voicing, and church volunteers will do the rewirin= g and electrical changes. (back) Subject: Re: Appreciation From: <Robert_Lind@cch.com> Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 13:00:09 -0500   Sometimes you're dealing with God's frozen people. I'm in a very warm, = friendly, open, huggy ELCA congregation, and they can be embarrassingly effusive = at times. It is most unusual for me not to get at least one "thank-you" at the en= d of a service every week. Usually, also, applause at the end of the postlude.=     I've also served churches in which I would receive relatively few posit= ive comments in a year from anyone within the congregation. It doesn't nece= ssarily mean they don't appreciate you, but it does make you wonder if you're i= n the right place--though it can certainly be said that we shouldn't be doing= "God's work" for potential accolades. Still, we're human, and if I feel I've d= one a particularly good job, I like to know that I communicated with someone = out there. Some congregations seem to operate on a "well, of course our organist-choirmaster is good. S/he wouldn't have a job here if s/he wer= en't." And then one could go on and on about people who don't know and don't c= are. Put a whole bunch of troglodytes in one place at one time and ........ you = finish the sentence.   If you're not worried about losing your current position or if you know= you can find another one that is equally as good, why don't you ask for some fe= edback from your staff and/or people within the congregation whom you know and= maybe even trust!   Lest you're taking too much to heart the comments of the anonymous toel= z, who has been spending endless time telling us on this list about the myriad= ways we can and should fail at our jobs because we're not doing things his/her = way, these hoary exhortations can be taken with more than a meager portion o= f sodium.   Robert_Lind@cch.com           Subject: Appreciation   I have almost completed 1.5 yrs at the local UMC.=A0 Not once has anyon= e ever said how much they enjoyed a prelude, postlude, offertory or hymn accompanim= ent.=A0 All the time I spend on careful registration, changes during a hymn, and mu= sical selections matching texts is all for naught. I only meant to indicate that the wrong pipes were wired to speak in an apparent effort to =   reproduce the 64' harmonic series. It is most ineffective. The flues just =   rumble as though I were holding down CCCC#C#C#DDD and the reeds just play horrific chords. I have never personally tried to note which pipes were actually playing, but an organ builder whom i trust told me that the = reason they were so awful was the someone was APARENTLY trying to wire the 64' series. In any event - they are awful and useless.   Larry L. Wheelock
(back) Subject: Hendrick Andriessen: Sonata da Chiesa From: "Karl E. Moyer" <kmoyer@marauder.millersv.edu> Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 15:17:39 -0400 (EDT)     In high school years as a budding organist, I received part of a recently-deceased organist's library, including the following: Andriessen, Hendrick, Sonata da Chiesa. E. B. Marks, 1926.   It's really a theme and variatons with a Finale section before a closing full-organ restatement of the theme. I've not looked carefully, but at surface level I see no thematic relationship of the theme to the finale section.   Does anyone play this piece? I don't see it listed anywhere and have not played it myself for perhaps 10 or 20 years. My older brother bought me a copy of the same composer's "Premier Choral" in the '50's in Amsterdam, recommended to him as an example of good current Dutch music. Anyone play that?   Just curious. Thanx. Cordially,   Karl E. Moyer Lancaster PA
