(back) Subject: Medinah Temple (Chicago) update From: "Jon C. The Shriners who own the Medinah Temple and the =3D adjacent Tree Studios artist colony wish to rid themselve of properties which no = =3D longer meet their needs. Fifield Realty held an option on the property which =3D they=3D20 dropped after strong opposition from the Chicago Mayor's office to =3D Fifield's plan raze the sturctures and build a hi-rise on the square block parcel. The = =3D west facade of the Tree Studios in the only portion of the property which has =3D landmark status so the rest of the complex has no protection against demolition even =3D though the Temple and Studios are on the list of the world's most endangered =3D significient architechural treasures. The mayor is looking for someone willing to =3D recycle the temple into some new useful enterprise. One developer is studying the =3D possibility of developing the Temple into some kind of commercial mall. This would =3D probably doom the Temple Auditorium and its' Austin. For those close to the =3D Chicago area will have an opportunity to hear a recital on the Austin by temple =3D organist William Aylesworth on Sunday February 27th at 3PM presented by the =3D Medinah Temple. (back) Subject: J S Bach's organ stops From: <TRACKELECT@cs.com> Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 20:16:09 EST   Recently, while surfing the web, I was taken aback by a site that I found. = I was searching pipe organs on www.goto.com. Hit # 184 came up as "J S = Bach's organ stops." Being a certified organ nut and a die hard Bach fan, I bit. What I found was a font of mis-information. Apparently this page from some =   grad student's site is intended to be some kind of joke. I don't find it remotely funny. I e-mailed the person responsible and told her that not = only was her information totally inaccurate but not funny. I suggested that the =   page be removed. She e-mailed me with a rather smug attitude and said that =   she had no intention of removing the page. My greatest concern is that = young people who are interested in the organ and/or Bach will find this site the =   same way that I did and will believe this mis-information. I urge you to visit this page and make your own decisions. The person responsible for it =   can be reached at www.beconrad@cgl.uwaterloo.ca. I urge you to e-mail her with your opinion. Bach lives! Do us all a favor and be careful about how you approach this one. You're = NOT going to find much satisfaction by flaming or issuing demands of the poor lass. In the end, you'll probably simply deepen the already pernicious popular stereotype of organists as arcane, anti-social, elitist snoots. Why don't we politely encourage her to try to fix some of the misinformation...perhaps instead of the venerable Sebastian Bach himself, = she could use a fictional unsung cousin, uncle, or brother in the Bach clan. = That certainly wouldn't change the punch line a whit. Your original post had me bracing myself for a blast akin to the homosexuality reference found in the old "King of Instruments No Longer" article. After reading it though, I see nothing but a silly little pun... Besides, at least she was talking about a PIPE ORGAN! Maybe my = browser is on crack, and didn't bother downloading the whole thing, but someone explain to me what 'sending in two Bach stops' means, and why I should = grin, smile, or guffaw? It might be obvious, and it's just too late for me to understand the thing, but I appeal to the list ... what's funny about it?   As far as removing the page, I don't think any manner of accuracy was her intent.
