(back) Subject: "Millionaire" musical mishap From: "Stanley E Yoder" <syoder+@andrew.cmu.edu> Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 20:11:58 -0500 (EST)   Last night (Thursday) there was the following question on TV's = "Millionaire":   What composer did NOT compose a requiem mass?   The choices: Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, and Rossini.   The correct answer was D: Rossini. Okay, but note the last word of the question. Brahms' German Requiem is not a *mass*, any more than the 'requiems' of, say, Delius and Hindemith, i.e., they are not settings of the liturgical texts of the Missa pro Defunctis but of their own choice (albeit Scripture in Brahms' case.)   So there were two valid answers to the question.   Alas, the contestant chose C: Verdi.   Tell him about it, Manzoni!
