My own was at Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens. It was placed for every assembly.   The pipe chamber was in back of the stage, so that when the curtains were drawn - a microphone placed in front of the chamber fed the sound to a couple of mediocre PA speakers.   ...Until I learned about the setup, and until I joined the Stage Crew, I could not figure out where those impressive bass tones were coming from!   Stan Lowkis Newtown HS 1963

Brown" <chabrown@bellatlantic.net> Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 19:10:56 -0400   Robert:   I went to Columbus, but frequenly played the organ at James Monroe (I = lived in Parkchester). I went there in the mid 60s. I do not remember the Ochse gentleman but I do remember one maintenance man from Sweeden by the name = of Beat Struli.   I think Monroe was a three manual Estey (too long ago to remember).   Charles   -----Original Message----- From: pipechat@pipechat.org [mailto:pipechat@pipechat.org]On Behalf Of COLASACCO, ROBERT Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2001 3:44 PM To: 'pipechat@pipechat.org' Subject: NYC High Shools Organs     I don't know if anyone on this list would be familiar with the history of what I'm about to talk about but I for one would be interested in knowing about the installation of Organs in NYC High Schools which obviously took place from the beginning of the last century until, well, I really don't know when, but I'd guess the '30s or '40s. It was, in fact, the organ at = my high school in the Bronx that inspired me to study the organ. I also know = of other high schools in the Bronx that have (had?) pipe organs and therefore assume they exist in other boroughs. And the organ case, was quite lovely = in my school, Morris High School built in 1902. The case was a mahogany wood carved gothic (neo?) work of art even with the Board of Ed seal carved = into it. The organwas (is?) a three manual moller and I have no idea when it = was installed. We had one teacher in the Music department who played it at assemblies even though he wasn't an organist (he was a clarinetist by profession) but he played quite well...he was an excellent keyboardist and all around musician and was quite accomplished in some pedal technique. = When I told him I was interested he just handed me the key one day to turn on = the blower and said go play your heart out. Which I did to the regret of the classes being held on the 2nd and 3rd floors... organum plenum was quite forceful. It was a good sounding instrument but set back into the stage which wasn't all that deep but deep enough not to allow the auditorium to fill with it's sound as much as it could. Anyway would anyone know why the Bd of Ed. of NYC would install such wonderful instruments in it's high schools? I certainly don't mean to sound like I'm against it. I wish they had only kept up the maintenance. But already on the 1960s when I was = there they were falling, or had fallen I should say, into disrepair. By the way the fellow who had the contract to maintain them (minimally--he tuned = them) was named Ochse...we prounced it Ox. I've forgotten his first name. Sound familiar?
