Its reach =   was then extended as a number of people who received it sent it to large private mailing lists of their own. Clearly, the story has hit a lot of people rather hard, and I have had some remarkable mail on the subject, = which I will hope to summarize and pass along in the next few days. This = evening, I had a request from the co-list owner of the Pipechat list to please post = the below on that list, but before doing that and also before posting on PipOrg-L, I wanted permission from Hans and Felix Hell, since it is their names that are being tossed around. I received that this evening when I = got in from New York, and now can share the whole story with you. For some of you, this will be a duplication of something you have already seen.   When I first heard and then wrote about this, I was really upset about it. = I looked at the horroble website of these people, and got even more upset = that such lunacy is abroad in the land. We have since had some rather calming = mail from people in Kansas who say that this picketing has become so routine = that people simply ignore it, and stressing that there is no danger. These = people know better than to disrupt an event. Anyway, here is what I sent out = earlier today:   Dear Friends,   If the subject heading sounds a bit like a horror story, it is. Felix is being picketed by the Fred Phelps gang when he plays at Grace Cathedral in =   Topeka, KS on Sunday, not because they think he is Gay, which he is not, = but on the grounds that he is German and they say Germany is soft on Gays, and =   "harbors many fags and pedophiles within its borders." (This is the lovely =   gang that picketed at Matthew Shepherd's funeral.) These people got the = press release about the Topeka concert, saw the word German, and found an opportunity for mischief. They faxed the article about this "action" published in their own paper to St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New York, where Felix is assistant. Hans Hell, Felix's father phoned me in a real = state last night. He had already phoned the NY AGO office, and at their request, =   faxed the paper to them. They were deeply concerned, and phoned James Thomashower immediately. Hans also phoned the dean of the Topeka chapter, = and was then phoned back by the dean of the cathedral, all offering assurances =   that security would be on hand to remove anyone who got inside and began = to make trouble. Felix was terribly shaken by this, and when shown the "God Hates Fags" website, responded with "God hates nobody." Good lad, that.   You can find this piece on the terrible website, if you find a place to = click called "Press Releases." I also have the piece as a PDF file in my = computer, and will gladly send it to anyone who would like to see it without having = to search and without adding your browse to the more than a million people = the counter says have accessed this completely odious site.   Perhaps the number of crazies involved is not large - I don't know - and = that might be some comfort, but if you look at the site, you will see how very persistent they are. Hans says that the church leadership involves a group = of lawyers, led by Fred Phelps, who is a former lawyer, disbarred at some = point. Most of the lawyers are, in fact, members of Phelps's own family, who also =   form the core of his so called church.   A look at the website is instructive, if a bit scary. There are long lists = of "actions" past and planned for the future. Whenever the American Boychoir hits the midwest, they are picketed routinely. There are several of their appearances on the list now. Lots of churches and denominations are also regularly picketed.   This is really dirty pool, trying to ruin a concert by a totally = a-political young artist hoping to do something beautiful! Any ideas about countering this sort of stuff? I will get a full report after the concert, and will pass it on. If any of you are anywhere near Topeka, perhaps you might be able = to be there to lend support, showing silent witness that bigotry will not = stop you.   This is a sad posting, but Felix's spontaneous "God hates nobody" is the bright spot to focus on.   Malcolm Wechsler P. S. I learned since sending this about a website called = GodHatesPhelps.com.
