(back) Subject: Re: Felix Hell to be picketed in Topeka, Kansas From: "Nicholas" <nickgood@ix.netcom.com> Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2001 22:36:49 -0600   This is a multi-part message in MIME format.   ------=3D_NextPart_000_000C_01C0A757.1927B580 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable   Hi,=3D20   I live in Topeka, KS where we have been putting up with this awful hate = =3D person and his small group of followers for many years.   Picketing this concert is just standard operating procedure --- has =3D nothing to do with Germany, or organists, or sexual orientation of =3D performers, --- its just a publicity technique that has unfortunately been very =3D successful for spreading there hate messages. They picket ALL of the major cultural events in Topeka, i.e. Visiting =3D symphonies, our own symphony, traveling Broadway show productions, The Kingston Trio, etc. Whatever comes to town gets picketed. If =3D Diane Bish were coming she would be picketed. They can find a reason to picket anything that will get them publicity. = =3D They will picket a local church congregation, based on the fact that some minister 1000 miles away conducted a gay wedding.   They thrive on publicity and public reaction. I have been involved =3D with three congregations that are regularly picketed each Sunday =3D morning. They yell obscene language at you in front of your grade =3D school kids and wave placards that display stick figures performing =3D sexual acts. A standard part of parent discussion after=3D20 church is "what do you tell your six year old" about those "sign =3D people", which is what most of the children call them.   The approach of most residents here has become one of simply ignoring =3D them as much as possible, because they thrive on conflict and =3D publicity. =3D20   They have virtually no impact locally on the actual beliefs and actions = =3D of most citizens. What they do get out of this is national recognition = =3D -- from other hate groups and fundamentalist organizations, and from = =3D national media (Time/Newsweek at the Matthew Shepard funeral last year, = =3D for example.) and that just eggs them on. From a local point of view the best thing that can happen is for them =3D just to picket (they will only be there as people arrive for the =3D concert, they never stick around for the actual event) and go how, and = =3D nobody anywhere pays any attention.   My plan for dealing with all this: I am encouraging as manny people = =3D as possible to take their children to this concert, and I am looking = =3D forward to hearing a=3D20 fabulous musician playing wonderful music on a good organ. I plan to =3D get there early to get good seats for my kids.     Nicholas Good Organist/Choir Director Seaman Congregational Topeka, KS ----- Original Message -----=3D20 From: ManderUSA@aol.com=3D20 To: piporg-l@listserv.albany.edu ; pipechat@pipechat.org=3D20 Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2001 12:17 AM Subject: Felix Hell to be picketed in Topeka, Kansas     Dear Pipechat and PipOrg-L,=3D20   The letter below was sent by me to a large private mailing list. Its =3D reach=3D20 was then extended as a number of people who received it sent it to =3D large=3D20 private mailing lists of their own. Clearly, the story has hit a lot =3D of=3D20 people rather hard, and I have had some remarkable mail on the =3D subject, which=3D20 I will hope to summarize and pass along in the next few days. This =3D evening, I=3D20 had a request from the co-list owner of the Pipechat list to please =3D post the=3D20 below on that list, but before doing that and also before posting = on=3D20 PipOrg-L, I wanted permission from Hans and Felix Hell, since it is =3D their=3D20 names that are being tossed around. I received that this evening when = =3D I got=3D20 in from New York, and now can share the whole story with you. For some = =3D of=3D20 you, this will be a duplication of something you have already seen.=3D20   When I first heard and then wrote about this, I was really upset about = =3D it. I=3D20 looked at the horroble website of these people, and got even more =3D upset that=3D20 such lunacy is abroad in the land. We have since had some rather =3D calming mail=3D20 from people in Kansas who say that this picketing has become so =3D routine that=3D20 people simply ignore it, and stressing that there is no danger. These = =3D people=3D20 know better than to disrupt an event. Anyway, here is what I sent out = =3D earlier=3D20 today:=3D20   Dear Friends,=3D20   If the subject heading sounds a bit like a horror story, it is. Felix = =3D is=3D20 being picketed by the Fred Phelps gang when he plays at Grace =3D Cathedral in=3D20 Topeka, KS on Sunday, not because they think he is Gay, which he is =3D not, but=3D20 on the grounds that he is German and they say Germany is soft on Gays, = =3D and=3D20 "harbors many fags and pedophiles within its borders." (This is the =3D lovely=3D20 gang that picketed at Matthew Shepherd's funeral.) These people got =3D the press=3D20 release about the Topeka concert, saw the word German, and found an=3D20 opportunity for mischief. They faxed the article about this = "action"=3D20 published in their own paper to St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New =3D York,=3D20 where Felix is assistant. Hans Hell, Felix's father phoned me in a =3D real state=3D20 last night. He had already phoned the NY AGO office, and at their =3D request,=3D20 faxed the paper to them. They were deeply concerned, and phoned = James=3D20 Thomashower immediately. Hans also phoned the dean of the Topeka =3D chapter, and=3D20 was then phoned back by the dean of the cathedral, all offering =3D assurances=3D20 that security would be on hand to remove anyone who got inside and =3D began to=3D20 make trouble. Felix was terribly shaken by this, and when shown the =3D "God=3D20 Hates Fags" website, responded with "God hates nobody." Good lad, =3D that.=3D20   You can find this piece on the terrible website, if you find a place =3D to click=3D20 called "Press Releases." I also have the piece as a PDF file in my =3D computer,=3D20 and will gladly send it to anyone who would like to see it without =3D having to=3D20 search and without adding your browse to the more than a million =3D people the=3D20 counter says have accessed this completely odious site.=3D20   Perhaps the number of crazies involved is not large - I don't know - =3D and that=3D20 might be some comfort, but if you look at the site, you will see how =3D very=3D20 persistent they are. Hans says that the church leadership involves a =3D group of=3D20 lawyers, led by Fred Phelps, who is a former lawyer, disbarred at some = =3D point.=3D20 Most of the lawyers are, in fact, members of Phelps's own family, who = =3D also=3D20 form the core of his so called church.=3D20   A look at the website is instructive, if a bit scary. There are long =3D lists of=3D20 "actions" past and planned for the future. Whenever the American =3D Boychoir=3D20 hits the midwest, they are picketed routinely. There are several of =3D their=3D20 appearances on the list now. Lots of churches and denominations are =3D also=3D20 regularly picketed.=3D20   This is really dirty pool, trying to ruin a concert by a totally =3D a-political=3D20 young artist hoping to do something beautiful! Any ideas about =3D countering=3D20 this sort of stuff? I will get a full report after the concert, and =3D will pass=3D20 it on. If any of you are anywhere near Topeka, perhaps you might be =3D able to=3D20 be there to lend support, showing silent witness that bigotry will not = =3D stop=3D20 you.=3D20   This is a sad posting, but Felix's spontaneous "God hates nobody" is =3D the=3D20 bright spot to focus on.=3D20   Malcolm Wechsler=3D20 P. S. I learned since sending this about a website called =3D GodHatesPhelps.com.=3D20 I have not checked it out yet, but will first thing in the morning.=3D20   ------=3D_NextPart_000_000C_01C0A757.1927B580 Content-Type: text/html; The newly restored organ of historic = Severance Hall will be used --- the organ playing a prominent role in this = monumental masterpiece.   I've made a special trip from New York City just for this performance. We desperately need a solid-state or multiplex relay, and = the console needs updating as well. I gave them several "outs," as we need a = new heating system, etc., but they were enthusiastic and we will be announcing = a campaign to raise about $20,000.00 for this project in the near future, = whith people thinking that the work can be completed in 2002.   Not only did they embrace the organ project, but they created a "music = sponsor" for every Sunday, just like the flowers, to sponsor a Sunday's music you = give $30 (or as much as you want,) and that fund is a descretionary fund to be = used for special needs. A blower is producing much more wind than is necessary, and =   it's stored and regulated in the reservoirs. For some reason, the turbulence is transmitted to the pipe, I suppose because when the organ is =   being played, wind goes directly from the blower, through the reservoir, = and through the pipe, carrying with it turbulent air.   I have listened to a single held note on several stops and the turbulence = is perceptible to me.
