(back) Subject: Carols from King's DVD From: "William T. Van Pelt" <bill@organsociety.org> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 10:48:53 -0500   A new DVD of 2 hours and 26 minutes duration features a rare, 45-minute = film of Boris Ord conducting the 1954 Service of Lessons and Carols at King's College Cambridge. Also on the DVD is a recent, special service of seven readings and carols at King's College, Cambridge, conducted by Stephen Cleobury and based on the format of then Service of Nine Lessons and = Carols. The recent service is recorded in the spiffiest video (NTSC 16/9 = Anamorphic> and audio formats (DTS Surround Sound, PCM Stereo). Also on the DVD is a 20-minute conversation among David Willcocks, Philip Ledger, and Stephen Cleobury. Alas, this program is not available on videotape; DVD only.   It is very enjoyable and informative, especially so in viewing Ord establishing his famous tempo for "Once in Royal David's City" that was maintained by Willcocks during his tenure but made faster (too fast?) by successors. One is a bit irritated that the Cleobury performance, fine and entirely enjoyable as it is, is not of a bone fide Nine Lessons and = Carols, but of a different service of seven lessons and carols, with some substituted readings. But, please buy it, anyway, for $25 at www.ohscatalog.org   Bill

(back) Subject: OFF-TOPIC: Advent and Christmas From: <quilisma@socal.rr.com> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 08:41:07 -0800   Christ CAME (past tense) at Christmas (well, actually, sometime in the middle of the summer, but no matter); he WILL come again to be our Judge (future tense). The one is a commemoration; the other is an event (the end of the world) that we look forward to with expectation, fear and trembling.   Christmas was a relatively minor festival in the Western Church until comparatively recently. And, as late as the early 1800s, Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day celebrations of the Eucharist were unknown in American Episcopal churches.   Epiphany was and is the big feast in the Eastern Orthodox churches.   The WORLD is wrong about Advent, NOT the CHURCH ... we should be watching and praying for Christ's return, NOT running ourselves ragged trying to find a purple Tickle Me Elmo or whatever THIS year's craze is going to be.   Besides, if you wait till Twelfth Night to give gifts, you can hit all the 50% off sales on Dec. 26th (grin).   Cheers,   Bud

(back) Subject: OFF-TOPIC: Advent, Christmas, Christian Doctrine From: <quilisma@socal.rr.com> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 10:07:30 -0800   The only folks who get to take a VOTE on what Christianity IS, and what Christianity ISN'T, are the bishops assembled in a full Ecumenical Conference, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, and there hasn't been one of THOSE in more than a thousand years.   As Christians, we are called to be IN the world but not OF the world.   What the "majority" of Christians think (about Advent, or anything ELSE) is NOT a basis for doctrine, discipline and worship.   The Church is not a democracy; Her Head is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, HALLELUJAH!   If Joe Sixpack doesn't know/care what Advent is, I should TELL him, in charity; but I'm not gonna get all wrapped around the axle if he chooses not to observe Advent.   I don't have to answer for Joe Sixpack; I have to answer for BUD CLARK, and no other.   I think y'all know me well enough to know that I'm NOT a right-wing conservative in matters of social and political issues; I AM in matters of DOCTRINE. That Christ will come on the Last Day to judge the quick and the dead is a matter of DOCTRINE, not opinion. "And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; (His) Kingdom shall have no end." (Nicene Creed)   "The world is very evil, the times are growing late" (St. Bernard of Cluny)   Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly!       Bud

(back) Subject: Mixture IDs From: "John Vanderlee" <jovanderlee@vassar.edu> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 16:26:41 -0800   Time to turn to more knowledgable folks. We obtained what appears to be a four rank mixture. We'd most likely sell it. However, we need to do an inventory.   At first glance it looked easy: Pipes were marked with pitch plus: mix 1, or mix 2 or mix 3 or mix 4. so we just laid out the matching pipes in order of pitch. BUT! there are a whole bunch of - and especially the smaller pipes - that did not just show the "mix1" "mix2" etc. They also had a second # stamped horizontally (perpendicular to the first number) stamped underneath. so it would read 3 2. or 1 3 or 3 3 etc. (imagine the 2nd # rotated 90 deg.).   Not knowing much about mixtures, I am saying "HELP"! how do I sort those pipes and what does it mean?   Thnx in advance!   John V

(back) Subject: Re: Mixture IDs From: "douglas morgan" <dkmorgan76209@yahoo.com> Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 16:13:00 -0800 (PST)   Dear John:   I don't know who the manufacturer of your pipes is, but we used a system at Aeolian-Skinner similar to the way you say your pipes are stamped. The number on top refers to the rank - 1 being for the first (or lowest pitched) rank. If there is no other number, it is for the first (bass) section. If it says 1/1, it is the first rank, first break (or second section). The same is true for the other ranks -- 5 meaning the fifth rank; 5/1, 5/2, 5/3 being the next breaks.   I can thoroughly sympathize with you. One of my churches decided that they needed to clean their organ. They put the two great mixtures, the Swell and Pedal mixtures in one box. Talk about a mixture!!!! I had to lay them all out on the floor and sort them out.   Good luck!   D. Keith Morgan     --- John Vanderlee <jovanderlee@vassar.edu> wrote: > Time to turn to more knowledgable folks.
