(back) Subject: Wurlitzer at the Symphony From: "John Vanderlee" <jovanderlee@vassar.edu> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 08:26:40 -0700     Dear List,   Last night we baby-sat our Wurlitzer at the Bardavon theatre in Poughkeepsie, NY see: http://bardavon.org/   It was the first rehearsal of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic for the upcoming concert this weekend 10/20, 10/21. It will have as its climax the St Saens "Organ Symphony". This is the first time since its rebirth in 1993 that our Wurlitzer is featured as a solo instrument in a symphonic setting. The organist is Lee Dettra formerly of West Point fame.   To be perfectly honest we were a bit nervous about all this, as "some people" poo pooed the idea of the Wurlitzer being up to such a "straight " setting.   We listened in the back of the theatre waiting for that big moment near the end of the symphony when the organ soars above the orchestra. We were not disappointed! Thanks to Lee's judicious use of stops and an espcially fine tuning job by our tuner Norm Andre the Wurlitzer sang out lustily and perfectly in tune with the orchestra. I swear I thought I was listening to a romantically voiced classical organ. The overall effect was tremendous!   The best compliment came from an orchestra member who said she was so glad that "we are using a real organ."   I hear tickets are still available, please check the website. http://bardavon.org/   John V

(back) Subject: NYC Recital Oct 28 From: "Jonathan B. Hall" <jonahall@indiana.edu> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 08:02:46 -0500 (EST)     Greetings, listers!   Our fall concert schedule at The Church of the Epiphany suffered a disappointing and unexpected setback when the recitalist for our October 28 recital backed out with scant three weeks' notice. This was after repeatedly assuring me that this would not happen, despite the events in New York.   So, I am pleased to announce that I will play our major fall organ recital myself.   Sunday, October 28, 7:15 PM, I will present a program of American organ music. Works will include "Comes Autumn Time" by Leo Sowerby, "The Burning Bush" by Herman Berlinski (and if you are not of a certain age, it's unlikely you've heard this fabulous and damn difficult toccata replete with Judaic symbolism), "Variations on the Star-Spangled Banner" by Dudley Buck, "Variations on America" by Charles Ives, and two movements of "Five Dances" by Calvin Hampton....among other pieces!   I have chosen to specialize academically in American organ music; my dissertation, which has been accepted and which will be defended next month, is on Calvin Hampton, and I gave an all-American recital as one of my DM programs at Indiana. I intend to make this a truly interesting and enjoyable recital. I hope you'll come and invite friends. There is a suggested donation of 10 dollars, or 5 for students and seniors.   The Church of the Epiphany is located at 1393 York Avenue, on East 74th Street in Manhattan. We are home to Aeolian-Skinner opus 1412, a tonally unaltered and supremely successful Joseph Whiteford installation. The acoustics are fabulous; the organ and room were the late Tony Bufano's oft-proclaimed favorites in the city.   We can be reached by the 6 train (to 77th and Lex) or the M31 bus (get on in front of Carnegie Hall and get off at 74th and York). Our website is www.epiphanynyc.org and my office phone is 212-737-2720 x 24.   Best wishes to all-   Jonathan B. Hall, FAGO, DM(cand) The Church of the Epiphany, NYC

This observation leads me to recommend Worth's book _Virgil Fox: The Dish_, because it contains many anecdotes and reminiscences of Richard Purvis as well.

(back) Subject: Looking for... From: "David Scribner" <david@blackiris.com> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 12:20:49 -0500   Hi Folks   I'm looking for a 25 note Deagan Chime Keyboard, the kind that attaches to an organ console. If i am not mistaken Deagan also made those keyboards for the electronic carillon units but I don't think that style will work. This is for connecting directly to a set of Deagan chimes. This is for a friend who has the chimes in his house but not playable from his organ.   If you have one of these or know of where I might find one please respond privately. I have already checked the usual places like the church Organ Trader web site, the Theatreorgan Classified Ad and even Ebay.   Thanks   David

The change of venue will be good for your health, and you'll have a fine organ to play while your getting better. :)   You deserve a little treat once in a while, as none of us are getting any younger. Think of it, a four story music room, with acoustics! It's a no brainer Glenda, you just got to buy it, and host fabulous organ parties, especially at Christmas time. Puh-leeeze!   All the best,   Ron Severin
