(back) Subject: 70-rank Skinner, Langlais on CD From: "William T. Van Pelt" <bill@organsociety.org> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 18:12:24 -0400   The resonant acoustic of the 1921 E. M. Skinner 4-70 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, serves well the new JAV-126 recording of it by Peter Stoltzfus. Repertoire is interesting -- Boellmann: Ronde Francaise; Bruckner: Adagio from Symphony 7; Gershwin: 3 Preludes for Piano; Sowerby: Prelude on Sine Nomine and Meditations on Communion Hymns Nos. 3 (Pange Lingua), 5 (St. Vincent), and 6 (Sacramentum Unitatis); and Franck: = Priere. The CD is brand new and available from OHS at http://www.ohscatalog.org   Also listed at the OHS Catalog is a new 2-CD (for a single-CD price) set that collects several well-known recordings by E. Power Biggs, Glenn = Gould, Anthony Newman, and Gustav Leonhardt playing organs by Flentrop, Casavant, Christian Muller, Silbermann, Mander, Rieger, "Father" Smith, and others = on a CD entitled "Mighty Organs."   The last improvisations, all on Gregorian themes, of Jean Langlais (1907-1991) were recorded in 1986 and 1987 during live events at Sainte-Clotilde in Paris where he succeeded Tournemire as titulaire. They are now issued on a new CD from Festivo.   Bill

A person interested in = organs would like to have a book on them. Can anyone reccomend a "BASIC" book about organs and how they operate. Al I = can think of is the Barnes books but they are really not basic. Thanks, Mack

I have to use a dialup connection as there's nothing else available, but I have no = problems with RealAudio, etc.   I've checked out Earthlink, MSN, and couple of others. I prefer AOL. = Have you ever tried 6.0?   Vicki

(back) Subject: Query re Howells From: "Glenda" <gksjd85@access.aic-fl.com> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 20:38:09 -0500   I am trying to finish my church bulletin, and am debating with myself on which Howells I want to do for his birthday. I have despaired of ever receiving my Directory of Composers of Organ Music from RSCM kindly autographed by Dr. Henderson. The order was finally successfully placed, after several efforts, over 3 weeks ago, and is probably sitting in some U.S. Post Office suspected of containing anthrax or something.   Although I think I have a recording with some biographical info on = Howells, I would appreciate any additional information prior to Thursday when the final draft goes to copy.   Thanks,   Glenda Sutton
