(back) Subject: RE: Langlais's typos From: "COLASACCO, ROBERT" <RCOLASACCO@popcouncil.org> Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 10:14:46 -0500   Well, that was the problem. I would never know. Even if something seemed = to me to be not right I might assume it is what the composer wanted. It's = very difficult to find "mistakes" when a piece is written in chordal clusters = and sometimes almost all 12 tones are present!!! One asks oneself, "Is that = what s/he wants or is it a typo when the chord reads Eb, G, Bb, Db, F, G, C, E, etc. Robert Colasacco (How come I'm still here?)   It's rather frustrating, as Langlais's music plays with dissonance some of the time anyway. You have to try to determine just how dissonant certain passages are supposed to be.   Randy Runyon runyonr@muohio.edu Music Director Zion Lutheran Church, Hamilton, Ohio   "Pipe Up and Be Heard!" James' Air) - H 517 Music during Communion: Blest are the pure in heart (Franconia; H 656) Simple gifts (H 554) Forgive our sins, as we forgive (Detroit: H 674) Closing Hymn: Lord, dismiss us with thy blessing (Sicilian Mariners) - H 344 Postlude: excerpt - Prelude and Fugue on the name B-A-C-H - Franz Liszt   Today's music honors the birthday of Liszt (October 22), a colorful character, as well as prodigious musician, who took holy orders in later life.   Today went off better than I expected. I either ate something bad or = caught a 24-hour bug on Saturday - by 3:00 p.m. or so I was in bed with severe chills and fever, body aches along with nausea and all THOSE concomitant symptoms; slept with the mop bucket next to the bed just in case. = However, the three cats took pity on me (or rather discovered the new crocheted afghan on the bed), and slept with me all night, getting up with me every thirty minutes or so. Rick slept in the chair because there was no room = for him in the bed! But we traded places in the middle of the night.   After a miserable night, I actually felt quite good this morning, except = for lingering nausea. Although I have done much better, I received = compliments on my cut-and-past of Liszt for postlude - I told someone that I played it really fast so that I wouldn't throw up on the organ! Did not stay for = the parish annual meeting - told Father that the smell of food was too much = for me, and I was really disappointed. I counted on getting one vote for the vestry, and now with me not present for the election, it looked like that was out!   Florida had frost last night, at least out here on the farm.   Regards to all,   Glenda Sutton (eying chicken soup with trepidation)

(back) Subject: Re: Membership in the parish From: "Noel Stoutenburg" <mjolnir@ticnet.com> Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 18:49:56 -0600   I think I actually wrote the line Alan attributed to Innkawgneeto, viz:   > Clergy in the ELCA who are called to the ministry in a parish are not > members, either.   to which Alan queried:     > Really? > > We recently installed a new pastor, and his family-members (wife and > kids) =93joined,=94 but he did not. So I think you must be right. But > what=92s the rationale here? I was a pastor in the American Lutheran > Church, and was always a member of the parishes I served; the ELCA > opinion must be different from that. But how come? As Father Martin > would ask, =93What does this mean?"   This was the practice in the LCA, too, IIRC. The nickel answer is that the shepherd is not part of the flock. There may be a bit of "anticlericalism" in this, as since the Pastor is not part of the congregation, the Pastor is not supposed to vote in Council / Vestry meetings, or in other policy groups. (Worship and music, or "organ [purchase] committee"--to keep this on topic)   ns
