(back) Subject: My letter to my Senator From: "Steve Chandler" <stevec@open-tech.com> Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 08:28:15 -0500   Hi All,   I hope you'll write your representatives and let them know how you feel. = Here's what I wrote my Senator.   Steve Chandler     Dear Senator Grassley,   I suspect my position will be a minority position, but I am concerned by what I'm seeing in the media regarding the tragic events in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. I hear calls for retaliation when I strongly believe that our future as a species depends on taking a more mature approach.   Of those who wish retribution I would ask this, has Isreal's policy of strict retaliation brought them any closer to peace? I believe the answer to be a resounding NO. I strongly believe that violence begets violence. Does that mean we do nothing? Absolutely not! But adopting a John Wayne approach will be counterproductive. If we stoop to their level and go in with bombers, fighter jets and guns ablazin' how much different are we? I am not disappointed with the President so far, his administration has worked on several fronts, console the nation and supply assistance to the victims, investigate the crime, and garner international support. What we do from this point will say a lot about who we are.   Simple retaliation will bring more retaliation from them and the violence will escalate. We see similar situations in Northern Ireland and in Isreal and Palestine. That's not a future I would choose. Can't we find a way to show how a civilized nation resolves these issues? If the USA is a world leader, then can't we act like one when the world most needs us to?   I ask that you simply ask these questions. The knee jerk response of retaliation shows little thought and higher judgement. I expect more from my government, but what I'm hearing out of Colin Powell (a soldier not a statesman) leads me to believe our administration ultimately plans a military response. I hope we won't take the politically expedient route, because in the long run that will simply lead to more violence. We as a nation can be better than that.   Sincerely,   Steve Chandler

(back) Subject: a question (X-posted) From: <quilisma@socal.rr.com> Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 08:12:48 -0700   What is everybody doing NEXT Sunday?   I'm wondering how long the themes of mourning and/or patriotism should be carried on in the Sunday services. In the US, at least, I'm thinking that the prayers for the dead and some sort of musical commemoration of them should continue until all the funerals are over; as to the patriotic, well, we're going to war ... I've thought of changing the Kneeling Hymn to the fourth verse of "America" ("Our fathers' God, to thee") for the duration. Are there any anglo-catholic churches that still sing the Prayers for the Queen/State after the Sunday High Mass, or does everybody do the Angelus nowadays?   Next Sunday is our Patronal, and we're singing "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men", so I suppose that pretty much covers all bases ("their bodies are buried in peace", etc.), but I'm not clear in my mind what to do AFTER that.   Bud-by-the-Beach
(back) Subject: Theatre and 'Straight Pipe Organ Sound Fonts From: "Bruce Miles" <bruce@gbmuk.fsnet.co.uk> Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 08:57:04 +0100   Just a note to draw your attention to the two Soundfonts on my website = which can be used to simulate pipe organs. One is for a Cinema (or Theatre if = you prefer it) Organ and the other a 'straight' or classical but rather un-baroque organ   I have just posted a new version of the 'Cinema Organ' soundfont which, as far as I know, is the only useable Theatre Organ soundfont on the web. It has properly configured tremulants, separate = stops a wide selection of preset combinations. There are full sets of = instructions for the beginner on how set it up and use it.   You do need a sound card which can handle soundfonts (the Soundblaster Live series and many other types) also a reasonable amplifier/speaker set up.   There are (at last !) some sample soundclips for both organs on on my website front page. (back) Subject: Re: the worst in NYC From: "Jonathan B. Hall" <jonahall@indiana.edu> Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 15:36:14 -0400     I don't usually perpetuate arguments; I am normally content to say my = piece and have done. But the mini-thread on falwell (I too will not capitalize the name) leads me to re-affirm every word of my first posting, and then some.   Amidst all the public and private expressions of appreciation I received, = I was also publicly accused of standing on a soap box, being intolerant = while condemning intolerance, and of having my facts wrong. Three strikes. = Here we go.       First, a tidbit that the media barely mentioned. The heroic Father Mychal Judge, OFM, who was killed while administering the anointing to a fallen firefighter, was a veteran of ACT-UP and other gay rights organizations too. Now that's a real Christian saint! I always did like the = Franciscans.   The photograph of the dear white-haired gay priest dead in the arms of = four firemen running from the wreckage is the most haunting all-male Pieta I have ever seen in my life. I see Christ in his Mother's arms in that moment, and I believe in God and in humanity more than ever. Fr. Judge sits in glory at the right hand of the Father, and no doubt continues to oversee rescue operations.   Another tidbit. A gay football player, famous in the Gay Olympics, was a leader of the heroic counterattack on the plane that crashed in = Shanksville PA. If I knew a damn thing about sports I'd remember his name. Shame on me. He's in glory too.   Also, a gay male couple and their three-year-old son were in the first death plane. A beautiful American family wiped out by religious fundamentalism on both sides of them.   Is anyone still so thickheaded, obtuse, and mean as to suggest that anal intercourse has the slightest moral relevance in the present situation? You're buried, if you do, below much more concrete than the victims on = Wall Street.       I went to Sheridan Square last night--to the sacred ground in front of the Stonewall Inn where our liberation began in 1969--a favorite corner of mine, as I am so often in the West Village playing concerts or = socializing. I looked to the south down Seventh Avenue and saw the horrible void where = I had always seen the Towers. I saw the smoke billow unabated. I saw the emergency vehicles still streaming down.   I saw the sad hopeless posters on every corner... missing person, missing person, missing person... worked on the 107th floor... worked on the 99th floor... worked in the South Tower... worked in the North Tower... worked for Cantor Fitzgerald... worked for Windows on the World... birthmark on right wrist... two silver bangles... I saw all the candles burning on the sidewalks... rosaries hung on wrought-iron fences... I knew that countless people had ascended into the sky as smoke... and I cried again....   And I called Bill on my cell phone, and we talked for an hour (he's in Bloomington right now) and he comforted me as a loving spouse will always do, and I went home.   and those two smug good ol' boys, bin Falwell and bin Robertson, shiny as piglets bathed in milk, comfy and safe, opined that the liberals and the fags had caused God to take off the veil of protection (the WHAT???) from our country, and we deserved the attack. God slipped off the condom, and now we have AIDS, is that it?   falwell's "apology"--which it wasn't; he said he regretted that people quoted him--is a pathetic, insincere back-pedaling from an attempted assault. To what extended theological discussion does he refer? Horse crap. I am a graduate of a Roman Catholic seminary, and again I say horse crap. Fundamentalism is the antithesis of complex theology. Horse crap = in triplicate! He said what he said what he said. In Latin, quid dixit, dixit.   Apology, my tookis. They were committing incitement to violence. Subtle theological dialectic, balderdash. They were speaking to their great unwashed, trying to tap into their inarticulate rage and turn it against = ME and at least half the organ profession. AND to turn a few dirty dollars = on the deal.   Even the very conservative New York Post is for defrocking falwell. I think he belongs in prison.   Those guys are theologically in kindergarten, and they have souls the size of dried lentils. Cockroaches, both of them, and a host of others like them. If America wants to rid the world of terrorism, maybe they should wait on Kabul and set their crosshairs on Lynchburg. Purity begins at = home.   Tom, don't call me intolerant, and don't accuse me of standing on a soap box, and don't say my facts are wrong.   Friends like these, New York doesn't need.     Jonathan Hall East Siders since 1806
