(back) Subject: Come on, give it a Wurl! From: "Paul Austin" <paulaustin1@btopenworld.com> Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 11:34:34 -0700   This is a multi-part message in MIME format.   ------=3D_NextPart_000_000E_01C25019.36C85BA0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable   Dear all,   There appeared last night in the local rag, an artical about the mighty = =3D WurliTzer that lives in the James Finegan Hall in Middlesbrough - UK.   The organ was shipped to England in September 1934 from the Tonawanda =3D works, near the US side of Niagra, and installed at a cost of =3DA33000. = =3D It was originally installed in the Granada Cinima in Bedford and then =3D moved to the peir Ballroom, Redcar. Stormy nights, the sea would wash =3D in, and this was threatening to fuse the entire outfit. It was later =3D decided to demolish the peir and its was moved to it's current location = =3D by a bunch of local enthusiasts, who have maintained and cared for the =3D organ ever since. These men have also been responsible for organising =3D concerts, performed by many big names, including Carlo Curly.   The organ is in beatiful condition, and has the famous hourseshoe-shaped = =3D console which sits on the stage, behind which is a 26ft by 12ft chamber = =3D which contains the 590 pipes, drums and percussion instruments.   The problem they are now facing is the fact that the team of enthusiast = =3D who have maintained this mighty instrument are getting on a bit. They =3D are finding that one of the main problems is 'climbing and clambering' =3D around the pipes. They are very concerned that the organ will be left =3D to perish, because there is no young blood to take over there life work.   I don't know if there is anyone local enough on the list, but I am told = =3D that the James Finegan hall can be contacted for details of how to get =3D in touch and offer a helping hand. (back) Subject: Re: prayer for choirs (slightly long) From: <Innkawgneeto@cs.com> Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 11:38:59 -0400   >>Grant us that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, = and what we believe in our hearts we may shew forth in our lives<<   This is also in the Chorister's Prayer (from Chorister's Guild, I think).   I adapted it to fit our Methodist sensitivities, but we use the = Chorister's Prayer before EVERY service. Both my adult and youth choirs = recite it prior to leaving the choir loft. It really seems to cause the = folks to center their hearts for their task.   The Chorister's Prayer as adapted by yours truly reads... "Glorious God, source of joy and righteousness, enable us as redeemed and = forgiven children evermore to rejoice in singing your praises. Grant that = what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, and what we = believe in our hearts we may practice in our lives, through Jesus Christ = our Lord, Amen."   For choir rehearsal, I have used Wayne Wold's book, "Tune My Heart to = Sing", which is a collection of choir devotionals based on the gospel = lectionary. It is for the 3 year cycle, and is wonderful.   Peace.   Neil Brown
(back) Subject: flute/organ music? (cross-posted) From: "Greg Homza" <homza@indiana.edu> Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 11:12:33 -0500 (EST)   Greetings, listers.   I will be playing a program of "serious" music for flute and organ in February, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for effective and/or interesting repertoire. I've got some ideas, but would be curious to hear others' suggestions based on their own performances and/or their experiences hearing recitals or recordings.   I am particularly in need of more "substantial" works (10 minutes or longer), and chant-based works. Transcription suggestions are also welcomed. It may help you to know that this show will be in a very reverberant room (7+ seconds) with a fairly large (70-ish rks, I think) and versatile modern pipe organ.   Any suggestions?   Many thanks, -greg homza bloomington, IN

(back) Subject: Re: flute/organ music? (cross-posted) From: "Jonathan Orwig" <giwro@earthlink.net> Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 11:06:08 -0700   Greg,   I took a quick visit over to Bodensee < = http://www.bodensee-musikversand.de > and found this: If you want to try it yourself, you can click the "suche" (search) button, then click on the "Ausw"alen" button (across from Besetzung).... scroll = down to Orgel und Flo"te, click, then click "Suche starten" button   This is not a secure order site, so I suggest you FAX your order, also ask them to ship via air mail if you want it quickly... by ship takes about 6 weeks!!   Two of my personal favorites are the Sonatas by Schroeder and Genzmer... nice listenable quasi-Hindemithian stuff. You also might be able to order some of this stuff via a USA supplier like http://www.sheetmusicplus.com = - one caveat: the BM number is Bodensee's order number _NOT_ the original publisher's product number.   Hope this helps,   Jonathan Orwig   NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te 12 St=FCcke f=FCr Fl=F6te und Orgel BM116744 = 11,80 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Alte Meister BM127661 12,02 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Alte Meister BM127635 12,00 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Alte Meister BM127655 12,02 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Music for Flute & Organ BM127334 21,47 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Pr=E4ludien f=FCr Fl=F6te und Orgel BM118273 = 14,90 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Romantische Werke f=FCr Fl=F6te und Orgel = BM133105 10,00 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Three English Voluntaries BM116814 13,00 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Wedding Classics for Flute and Organ BM128963 21,88 NOTEN Orgel & Fl=F6te Abel, Carl Friedrich (1723-1787) Zwei Sonaten = opus VI, Nr. 2 und 3 f=FCr Flauto traverso und Bc. I'd suggest looking at programs they've done together, including some of their own compositions.   Peter   -----Original Message----- From: Greg Homza [mailto:homza@indiana.edu] Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 11:13 AM To: PIPORG-L@LISTSERV.ALBANY.EDU; PipeChat Subject: flute/organ music? (cross-posted)     Greetings, listers. Many thanks, -greg homza bloomington, IN     "Pipe Up and Be Heard!" (back) Subject: a cavil Re: Cavaille-Coll 6-CD set From: "Robert Lind" <Robert_Lind@cch.com> Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 13:45:37 -0500   I might be interested in this if more info. were provided on the website. E.g., who is playing what music on what instruments? Am I = missing something here? Did I fail to click the button that tells all? I find nothing but the most general, unhelpful description, which is rather atypical of OHS. Maybe they just recorded a maintenance person on tour = who drew stops and plunked random notes with an umbrella. C'mon!   Hoping for a Coll-ection of some sort, Robert Lind   =20       The new 6-CD set surveying Cavaill=E9-Coll organs and including a booklet of more than 200 pages with descriptions of the organs is now available from OHS for $75. http://www.ohscatalog.org   Bill
