(back) Subject: Lenten Question? From: "Malcolm Wechsler" <manderusa@earthlink.net> Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 00:49:52 -0500   Stan's interesting post brings to mind a true story. We organized an Organ Committee at the cathedral I served for some years in Canada, to talk about a major rebuild and reorganization of the old Casavant of the Stephen Stoot days. The committee was pretty good until the Dean, for purely political reasons, added a new member. The Dean wanted him to feel "involved." We knew nothing about this guy, until we began tossing around possible sums of money for the work, which really threw this guy - he had no idea of the costs of organs or major work on them. He said, and I quote, and I can still hear that voice after all this time: "Ya know, people, when the Church Triumphant rises up to heaven, it ain't gonna take no damn Pipe Organ up with it!" I am not sure how long the silence lasted after that, but it was a long time! The chairman took him aside after the meeting and suggested that he was clearly uncomfortable being on what had to be the wrong committee.   I hope I get good points for turning Stan's Guestion into a Question! It was rankling the proof reader in me!   Cheers,   Malcolm   ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stanley Lowkis" <nstarfil@mediaone.net> To: <PIPORG-L@listserv.albany.edu>; "PipeChat" <pipechat@pipechat.org> Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2002 9:57 PM Subject: Lenten Guestion?     > Did Jesus ever hear a pipe organ or the Roman equivalent? > > What instruments did He hear in his lifetime > > And how can this be conveyed to all of the faithful in your churches? > > Stan > > > "Pipe Up and Be Heard!" > PipeChat: A discussion List for pipe/digital organs & related topics > HOMEPAGE : http://www.pipechat.org > List: mailto:pipechat@pipechat.org > Administration: mailto:admin@pipechat.org > Subscribe/Unsubscribe: mailto:requests@pipechat.org > >

After my 50+ years of playing for churches I have seen many changes and played for many churches. Some were =   there for the fellowship, some for Bible Study, and some there for others = to see their new clothes, etc. I have been where I am now for 14 years, = except for 3 months right before I became ill, and there have been a lot of = changes there. We have a new young pastor who is very sincere and wise beyond his =   years. For the first time since the 70's the church is growing. Sure, = there are things I would like to change, but I feel like I have been to church (worshipping God) after playing for a service there. God put me there, = and there are some things that I "just have to deal with," as the Music = Director tells me. As for the Mega Churches -- I agree with you, Bruce. There = have been several in this state which grew very fast, the church spent lots of money to expand and make recreation facilities, and some even a new sanctuary. These are now either bankrupt or have sold the buildings and moved to a smaller place, as the churches have a tendency to split eventually. And the attendance is less than half of what it was in the = "Mega Church" days. I don't want to judge their motives. This is just what is seen from the outside.
