(back) Subject: A taste from the past From: "Glenda" <gksjd85@direcway.com> Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 20:06:02 -0500   Today, my 24th wedding anniversary, I spent breaking down a 29-gallon aquarium and setting it back up, instead of playing the organ in church. This was a task I had put off for several months. After ensconsing the three fish in a smaller tank upstairs, I went to work. It took several hours, but looked fabulous.   This afternoon I went to the grocery store, and guess what I found - Yuengling beer at a Northwest Florida Winn Dixie! There was light, lager, and "black and tan" (the latter sounds so decadently red-necked!). I was dumbfounded, but of course could not pass up the opportunity to purchase some fine Pennsylvania brew, "the oldest American beer". I didn't even wait to chill it, but opened one and poured it into a frosty mug with a couple ice cubes.   I was suddenly transported back to the first time I had a Yuengling beer, in Pennsylvania at a small restaurant in the town now known as Jim Thorpe, on a Sunday after my first week ever in New York City hearing some of the finest organs and seeing some wonderful churches. While sipping, my mind flashed back to hearing Fred Swann at Riverside, Guy Bovet at St. Michael's, Joyce Jones at Heavenly Rest, Todd Wilson at St. Patrick's, Thomas Murray at St. Bart's, to name a few. This while eating hamburger steak (Rick is on the Atkins diet, so no fancy meal tonight) and remembering martinis, fabulous prime rib and a myriad of hot dogs from the vendors.   Isn't it amazing how our senses work, how a smell or taste or color can transport us to another place and time?   Glenda Sutton gksjd85@direcway.com

Yuengling donated an organ, Hook & Hastings Op. 1368, 2 manuals, 25 registers, to Trinity Episcopal Church in Pottsville, where his brewery was located. The organ, alas, is no longer there.   John Speller
