(back) Subject: Re: Crowd-pleasers (was: trashy organ music) From: "Jonathan Orwig" <giwro@earthlink.net> Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 15:08:45 -0700   This is a multi-part message in MIME format.   ------=3D_NextPart_000_00B5_01C2325A.D6D4A220 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable   Hmmm...   Let's see here.... There are any number of familiar pieces that fit =3D this one, and also quite a few lesser-known ones...   Widor - Final to 2nd Symphonie Kromolicki - Etudes 1 & 2 Wiedermann- Impetuoso Spicer - Kiwi Fireworks Berveiller - Mouvement Bonnet - Elves d'Antalffy-Zsiross - Sportive Fauns Bossi - Scherzo Whitlock - Fanfare fr. 4 Extemporizations Bovet - fuga sopra una soggeto Orwig - Fugue in f-minor Fleury - mvt 3 of the 1st Symphonie   Some commmentary... I was intrigued when I heard the Widor many years =3D ago... I actually like it better than the infamous Toccata (and it's easier, =3D too!). The Kromolicki pieces are fun... #1 is an arpeggio study, #2 a staccato study... I've a recording I made of the #2 if anyone wants to hear how =3D it goes! Wiedermann's Impetuoso is a hoot - I've only heard one rendition = =3D (an old LP I have of Jiri Ropek performing) and it sounds difficult, but I'm sure it would be a crowd-pleaser. The Kiwi Fireworks are a set of variations on the NZ national anthem... full of surprises and good clean fun - there is an excellent recording of it by Christopher Herrick in =3D his "Organ Fireworks" series. The Berveiller is sort of like boogie-woogie/ragtime for the organ... difficult but worth the work (if = =3D you can find a copy of the score... it was never published). Elves is a =3D nice quiet "pleaser", in contrast to most of the bombast I've mentioned so =3D far... I heard Cherry Rhodes perform "Sportive Fauns" and chuckled the whole =3D way through... The Bossi is an old staple (didn't Virgil do it? My memory fades...) and the Whitlock a nice find, full of changing meter, cross rhythms and spicy harmony (ya gotta have a fair-sized trumpet for this =3D one). The Bovet is an irreverant piece... takes the Mancini "Pink Panther" =3D theme and makes a Fugue of it... always brings chuckles. In a fit of self-promotion I'll mention my own Fugue in f-minor... a bluesy sort of subject - it has been known to elicit shouts and yells of delight at the close of a performance (though whether due to its conclusion or in =3D response to the piece itself is unclear <grin>) The Fleury piece is a delightful little scherzo (a bear to play in =3D places).   I'm sure as soon as I send this off more will come to mind... if anyone wants publisher info or sample recordings (in low quality RealAudio, but good enough to get the idea) I'll be happy to help.   Cheers and Aloha,   a recently-returned-from-Maui Jonathan Orwig     --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
