Mix and match corrupts the instrument, not to mention complicating maintenance.   < I figure if the church can afford it, then why the heck NOT, get a 5 = manual organ? I am in no way meaning to pass judgement either, but why should it =   matter if church organ music was written to be played only on a 3 manual organ, or not? Who cares? in a certain way, and further does it REALLY matter? >   What matters is the long term maintenance and care of the instrument. Is = it REALLY a good idea to get such a large instrument UNLESS definite = provisions can be made for it's long-term care. Remember, that 5-manual 100+rank instrument is going to have to be rebuilt or refurbished sooner or later depending upon the action, climate and quality of construction/materials. = Good stewardship and just plain old common sense should lead to a = carefully thought out decision.     <I am tired of the trend towards musical "authenticity" and musical "purists". "authenticity" meaning people who get some self-righteous bug = up their @$$ and decide that classical music is WORTHLESS unless played on instruments sounding like they did 400 years ago.>   Are you a student? You should be! We ALL should be, and should be vigilant in expanding our exposure to both new and old form. I well remember those days when I deplored traction (flush-toilet!) action, and (GASP) unequal temperament. I investigated, listened, experimented, and have discovered a tracker action organ without pistons and with unequal temperament is MY preference. I don't consider others bad (unless they = have speakers!!, excluding synth's). But the important thing is to be open = to and appreciate the validity and appropriate beauty of all periods. = Today I played Bach, Pachelbel and Reger for voluntaries on a 3/44 EP Casavant (1975). I would rather have played the Bach and Pachelbel on a nice, conservative tracker with a severe unequal temperament, and the Reger on a =   big, bold romantic instrument (with a mild unequal temperament). But I enjoy all three composers and really enjoy the Casavant. They are all, together, enjoyable, even though I don't have my instrument of preference. = And, although not a snob, I DO think that the re-discovery of unequal temperament is likely the greatest thing since sliced bread! ;-)   Virgil Fox was probably just as severe in his own way as E. Power Biggs = was in his. Both are enjoyable and we can learn much from each. My = preference would be Biggs for some things, Fox for others. I certainly do not want = to limit my selections of opportunities to enjoy music.   Bruce, with Miles, Molly and Degui in the Muttastery at Howling Acres http://members.tripod.com/Brucon502
