I fail to understand how that is > "spreading ill-will and religious tension."   Hmmm... I don't usually jump in on these, but Dr. Hall, I have to agree = with Mr. Clark here. Bud did NOT attack the Episcopal Church (of which I am a member, thank you), but rather criticised the 1982 Hymnal, which he = doesn't like. He was very specific about the points in the hymnal which he = doesn't like and after re-reading them several times, I don't see any attack from = him on the Episcopal Church per se, nor do I see him spreading ill will.   You, on the other hand, have attacked Bud and Bud's denomination, of which = my father-in-law is also a member. I personally take umbrage with your condescending description of that denomination. To wit, you said:   I don't personally trust them because they are too small, too particularized, and too sure that the have THE TRUTH.   Well, the same thing could have been said of a certain sect of Jews a = little under 2000 years ago, or followers of Martin Luther in the 16th century, = fwiw.   Then in the same message, you said: But hey, it's a free country, and they're entitled to believe that they alone, a handful of conservative Republicans in California, understand the teachings of a blue-collar Jewish rabbi of two thousand years ago.   My father-in-law is a bit conservative, but he will be among the _last_ to =   claim that he has the only inroad on The Truth and he NOT in California. = He is, though, a very learned man, a professor emeritus of English and art = and has studied Greek, Latin, and recently, Hebrew. He just doesn't like the = 1982 Hymnal enough to go to a church which still has an Episcopal flavor (and = _no_ Baptist tremolo) and does not use the 1982 Hymnal.   And while we're at it, what's wrong with the Old Catholic Church? I have friends who are members of that denomination, also, as well as friends who = are members of the Roman Catholic Church and friends who are members of the Baptist Church, etc.   You disagree with Mr. Clark. That's fine. Mr. Clark did not attack you personally nor the Episcopal Church. He has expressed his dissatisfaction =   with the 1982 Hymnal, and he is not alone in that. If you wish to offer scholarly rebuttal to his critiques of the 1982 Hymnal, have at it. = That's part of what makes this list educational and fun for the rest of us. But = your attacks on _his_ church are certainly out of line. Your argumenta ad = hominem are out of place and so are your charicaturizations of his denomination, = as would be attacks against any denomination or religion on this _very_ ecumenical list.   Sincerely, Tommy Lee Whitlock
