(back) Subject: Report from the Cape From: "David Baker" <dbaker@lawyers.com> Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2003 01:12:16 -0400   Hi. The Region One AGO convention is underway. Here is a partial, but hardly impartial, report. Partial because I could not go this morning (Monday) and not impartial because you're getting my opinions. I spent = the afternoon with the contingent that did workshops and recitals at the Community of Jesus in Orleans; it is supposedly an ecumenical foundation with resident brothers and sisters, as well as lay families. I say supposedly because it comes across as more high-church Anglican than = Church of the Advent, Boston. We were treated to the office of Nones sung mostly in latin by the brothers & sisters, then a presentation on gregorian = chant, which the Community makes much of. Wonderfully well done but I was not convinced by the scholarly explanations; a minor quibble. The Community church is called Transfiguration; it is a magnificent building still being decorated. Fabulous acoustics; everything was clear as a bell. The = choral group Gloria Dei Cantores is based there. They sang Evensong so well that = I was transported back to St. Thomas 5th Avenue! The fact that they sang Hancock's Preces & Responses helped. Bruce Neswick's Centennial Canticles and an anthem by Domenick Agento completed the choral program and the hymn was King of Glory, King of Peace (General Seminary). The organ is a 4-manual Skinner, frankensteined from various organs by Nelson Barden. It is incredibly good. Dinner was on the Community. The evening program was Thomas Murray. Woolsey Hall has nothing on the organ we heard tonight, = and Tom praised the organ, asking Nelson to stand and receive the ovation of = the assembled multitude. Question? Why was this recital at the beginning of the convention? This was was a closer from the word go. Tom played fabulously, ending with a Jongen sonata which was so good the audience didn't wait until he was finished playing to start the ovation! If everything isn't down hill from here, I for one will be surprised.   Regards, David Baker
(back) Subject: Erbens in NYC From: "David Baker" <dbaker@lawyers.com> Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2003 01:12:17 -0400   Regarding the Erben in the Chinese Church, I maintained it for a few years when I was doing maintenance work regularly. Without getting out my file, I don't recall that Mann & Trupiano had anything to do with the instrument. I DO recall that Gilbert Adams worked on it and re-did some of the pipework. When I last saw it - around 15 years ago - it was playing, although the church did not appreciate what they had, opting to use a Rogers or Allen down stairs in the sanctuary (the organ is installed in the rear part of the gallery). I would be interested to know if anything has happened = since then.   David Baker
(back) Subject: Be Thankful, Ye from "The Cape" From: <ProOrgo53@aol.com> Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2003 02:00:36 -0400   Be thankful you're able to attend a Regional. Many people this summer = cannot afford to attend due to serious illness, fear, expense, whatever.   I believe if I had been blessed today to hear GLORIA DEI CANTORES singing = over a mud puddle and then get to conclude the day with the fabulous = blessing of hearing Thomas Murray, I'd be elated and most grateful.   Perhaps an attitude adjustment as you approach Tuesday's "blessings" is in = order.   I'm really sick and ashamed of all the carping that's going on this summer = by so many people all over this country finding fault with so much that = has been lovingly prepared to the glory of GOD and so many folk with their = noses out of joint are bannying around being super-freak-critics! WHY? WHY = IS THIS?   Enjoy the music! Enjoy one another! It could all end at any moment for any = of us with no warning at all (just as it did for one of my best friends, = age 51, at work last Thursday afternoon --- massive heart attack, fell to = the floor dead, and now he's in his casket, 6 feet under Earth's = magnificent surface. End of life as he knew it. Period. It's over!   Is it any wonder "we" aren't reaching the general public with magnificent = church music when we carp and gripe and carry on like folks with little = sense, criticizing our colleagues whom we should be upholding and lifting = up and giving thanks for?   I suppose we've both stated our opinions! They appear to differ widely.   Dale G. Rider Independence, MO
(back) Subject: Be Thankful, Ye From "The Cape" From: "Malcolm Wechsler" <manderusa@earthlink.net> Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 04:25:37 -0400   Dear Pipechatters,   I assume that Mr. Rider's awful diatribe is aimed at David Baker's thoughtful comments about the Cape Convention. I don't see that Mr. Baker requires an "attitude adjustment" as he approaches "Tuesday's blessings." Nor do I see him "carping, finding fault," and "griping." He is full of praise for Evensong, full of praise for the Organ, and full of great = praise for Tom Murray's recital." Under the rules of our democracy, he is = permitted to suggest that the concert was so good that it might well have been = placed as the closing event of the convention. He is permitted to suggest a = quibble or two about some of what was done. I, for one, not having been there, = have, from Mr. Baker's report, the impression that something quite wonderful = took place.   Because there are people that cannot afford to go because of "serious illness," are we to refrain from constructive comments? Because a friend = of Mr. Rider recently died at the age of 51, are we to never again utter anything but the comments of a Pollyanna?   Thanks, Mr. Baker, for your thoughtful comments. I will finally get there = on Wednesday, and look forward to great things. Meanwhile, tomorrow (actually today - Tuesday), please hear my friend Juan Mesa in his recital as winner of the Regional Competition, and tell us the truth, whatever it may be. Juan, from Chile, is an excellent student of Stephen Roberts, and I shall look to you for news of the event. I'll hope to see you at Stephen Simon's house on Wednesday, when the house Organ we built for him a few years ago = is being shown, complete with its Ruck Great and <en chamade> Krummhorn!   Best to all,   Malcolm Wechsler   ----- Original Message ----- From: <ProOrgo53@aol.com> To: <dbaker@lawyers.com>; <pipechat@pipechat.org> Sent: Tuesday, July 01, 2003 2:00 AM Subject: Be Thankful, Ye from "The Cape"     > Be thankful you're able to attend a Regional.
