(back) Subject: Contracts From: "David Baker" <dbaker@lawyers.com> Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 17:18:01 -0400   I recently started a new job in a R.C. church in a Boston suburb. Wonderful room, 3 manual, 100-year old Hook & Hastings (according to Barbara Owen, one of the first they built with electro-pneumatic action, slider chests), competent cantor, and -Praise Be - a pastor that likes music, sings >very< well himself, and doesn't complain (very much) about us singing all the verses of hymns. When I accepted the position, I made sure that we would have a written contract, and he said no problem, just present me with something. I went to the AGO website, downloaded the Model Contract, took out the excess verbiage and modified it to our use, he modified a couple of points and then signed it!   Had he refused, that would have indicated a problem, and I would have kept my ears open about other positions. If the pastor (or music committee, or whatever) is not willing to make a commitment to YOU, why would you make a commitment to them? Every relationship - business or personal - is a two way street. If both parties are not willing to commit, there is no >real< relationship.   In other words, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I suggest the reverse is true, too; Don't do unto others if they won't do unto you.   Comments, anyone?   David Baker
