At first, investigate the church's archives (Sorry, I don't know if in US-America organ purchases are registered there). Second: If the organ was "torn out" as you say, I = suppose there are no chests, reservoirs, pipes, operating organ parts anymore?- = only the empty facade?- in this case the organ must be considered as "lost in history" and it would be cheaper to build a new organ using the facade.   Just a short opinion from a far away desk :)   Andres =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D First was the cat, then was the Orgler. (back) Subject: Keane Chapel, Enfield NH From: "Hugh Drogemuller" <hdrogemuller@sympatico.ca> Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 16:10:36 -0400   Mack asked about the Casavant organ standing in this room. I attended a concert that Nigel Potts played there last summer. The organ is original and in pretty good condition; the acoustic is excellent ; Nigel's playing was top notch as usual thus it was a = thoroughly satisfying experience. Listening to this instrument in this room made we wonder why mixtures are needed. The chorus seemed to need nothing more beyond the 2' .   HD
(back) Subject: Re: The mighty Compton! From: "John Foss" <harfo32@hotmail.com> Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 20:46:45 +0000   Oh yes, it's nice to reminisce on the glories of yesteryear! The ghost of John Compton haunts this list quite regularly. Don't forget St Mary Magdalene, Paddington - which really deserves to be on the historic organs =   list IMHO. It is smoke and mirrors as Colin says, but very appropriate in this victorian gothic high church setting. Of course the church acoustics are part of what makes it what it is, but then this is so often the case with any organ. They did go into into decline in the final years - though Ted Rippin was a fine console maker and Johnny Degens a superb reed = voicer, and the early Degens and Rippin organs more or less continued the = tradition. When Maurice Forsyth Grant put his money behind the firm in due course = they changed track completely, becoming Grant Degens and Rippin then Grant = Degens and Bradbeer. As old age overtook M. F-G his interest declined - I guess = we might have got the Christ Church Cathedral Oxford contract if I had pushed =   him to come to the meeting with Simon Preston, the Dean and the college authorities, but it was not to be. The firm more or less came to an end after moving in with Davies, though John Bailey was a fine craftsman to = the end. Does anyone know what happened to him? He was at one time with = Arnold, Williamson and Hyatt of Trunch, another "niche" firm who built two or = three very good organs, including the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham and St Thomas on The Bourne, Farnham in Surrey, where he was responsible for much =   of the tonal finishing and work on the tracker action. I also still have the set of six 1ft pipes that he had made for me = to illustrate his firm's scaling and voicing ideals: Principal, Gedackt, Blockflote, Spitzflote and Salicional. No nicking, on 2 1/4" wind, high-quality spotted metal, big scaling, very low mouths, huge foot-holes.   Maurice was a wonderful correspondent - full of high good humour, vitriol, diatribes, side-swipes, theory, personal chat and gossip, philosophy. He sent me a heap of his firm's brochures, too.   And all on Grant's whisky money?   Ross
