Her teacher is a college senior and very talented but hasn't taught a lot yet. I am thankful, as we drive some distance there are other costs to me in time and fuel, and she is learning well under his instruction. Also, we are in a rural area and professional people just don't get paid as much, including me. Amy
(back) Subject: Brombaugh Opus 35 From: "Alicia Zeilenga" <azeilenga@theatreorgans.com> Date: Mon, 03 Nov 2003 18:36:32 -0600   Hello, My professor took the other undergrad and me on a field trip to see Brombaugh's Opus 35 at the historic First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Illinois. It is a lovely organ in a very nice room. He even played the St. Anne Prelude for us from memory. It was absolutely wonderful! The simple and inadequate reply is that I did not have enough of a handle on just WHAT what going to be done, as = close as I am to Pedro. (back) Subject: Re: X-POSTED - Organ Lesson question - OFF TOPIC From: "Shelley Culver" <culverse@westminster.edu> Date: Mon, 03 Nov 2003 19:46:06 -0500   I'm amazed at the price of lessons! When I was in high school, I took oboe, organ, voice, and piano lessons. I paid $18 for an hour of oboe, $12 for 45 minutes of voice, $8 for a half hour of piano, and my organ lessons were...free! All I had to do for those was buy the needed music. I told the Minister of Music that I wanted lessons and she said "5:30 on Thursdays before Choir." Over the summer I taught piano lessons at Chautauqua Institution, and I got paid $20 an hour, but the students paid $40 an hour. I was amazed at the prices!! (Though it worked out well for me!) Here at school, the students who teach lessons get paid $7 a half hour. But I'm from rural Chautauqua County NY, and at school in rural New Wilmington, PA... I guess location does make a difference!   Shelley   >>> ContraReed@aol.com 11/03/03 6:03 PM >>> In a message dated 11/3/03 12:21:58 AM Eastern Standard Time, reedstop@charter.net writes:   << I have a request from a potential new member of the congregation I serve to give her organ lessons. I've not done this for YEARS, and I'm not sure what to charge. What is the going rate? I'm not degreed, and she's not looking for college-level instruction, so I don't feel right asking for a whole lot. Would $25 for an hour be out of line? This isn't like a main income for me...just something to help someone out looking for some help. >>   A lot of this depends on what part of the country, and to a lesser extent, what the socio-economic level of the immediate area you're in. Here, just outside Baltimore, I charge $30 per hour for woodwind/string lessons for middle and high school kids. If I were farther out in the suburbs (or exurbs) (or to the DC suburbs), $40 - 45 per hour for this age group would probably not be out of line. I remember the last time I paid for bassoon lessons (with the principal bassoonist of the National Symphony), it was $80 per hour, and he even had middle school students whose parents paid that amount (and this was in the late 80's). I was surprised when I took viola lessons with a quite gifted and experienced teacher, and he only charged $20 per hour (mid 90's).   One thing you should get cleared up at once (if you haven't already), is the use of the church organ (if that's where the lessons will take place). I can imagine there will be someone grumbling as to how you're making money off "their" organ.   Richard "Pipe Up and Be Heard!" (back) Subject: Children's choir music From: "Shelley Culver" <culverse@westminster.edu> Date: Mon, 03 Nov 2003 19:49:20 -0500   Hi everyone--   I've recently acquired a kid's choir at my church, and all they come with is one measly little book of cheesy choruses. The Director of Music tells me that I have a budget for new music, so now I need some places to find music or some recommendations of music to get. The pieces need to be super, ultra, mega simple. There's only 6 or 7 kids usually, but they're spirited and love to sing. So if anyone has any suggestions, please send them to me and I'll be forever thankful!!   Shelley   Shelley E. (back) Subject: Paul Creston From: "Richard Hazelip" <rhazelip@quik.com> Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2003 19:00:48 -0600   I am studying the music of Paul Creston written for organ and am = especially interested in finding recordings of his organ music. It = seems obvious that the music was not widely recorded. Please let me = know if you have access to this treasure and are willing to help.   Richard Hazelip

I know there is a = St. Patrick's Cathedral recording by Donald Dumler which has something = of Creston on it. This URL = http://cds.thepricesearch.com/artist/Paul-Creston will give you some of = what you seek.   I had an LP long ago which included a Rhapsody for Piano and Saxophone = which was a wonderful piece.   See also John Henderson, who reveals, among other things, Creston's = original name, a bit of a mouthful.   Please call off the QuikCop as you receive this, so I don't get another = of those silly and intrusive forms. There is no way I will fill such a = thing out for a perfect stranger.   Good luck,   Malcolm Wechsler www.mander-organs.com=20   ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Richard Hazelip=20 To: PipeChat=20 Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 8:00 PM Subject: Paul Creston     I am studying the music of Paul Creston written for organ and am = especially interested in finding recordings of his organ music. (back) Subject: Organ Not Ready From: "F Richard Burt" <effarbee@verizon.net> Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2003 19:29:42 -0600   Hello, Douglas Campbell: Let me add my support for your advice. The time I most nearly was killed was pushing late, ...very late into the evening to complete an installation for a dedication by the Bishop on a date that was set by the local pastor and stewards (UMC) long before the organ was ready to ship out of the factory. Now, I say to the people, ...if there is any possible doubt in my mind that we cannot complete it by the date they would like to dedicate it or present it in concert, ...for whatever reason, that I will tell them when it is ready. If not, they will not have the organ to play (for I have secret parts that can be removed in 2 minutes that will disable the organ completely). Would I stoop to such a device? You bet! If the baby is not ready, don't try to deliver it. F. Richard Burt Dorian Organs ..

So, I guess it is proper to preach. Pity the man/woman who has nothing of conviction to say that would interest the parishioners.   F.
