(It may be a parlor-style reed organ.)   Alan

(back) Subject: Re: Baptist Service Playing From: <OMusic@aol.com> Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 20:58:13 EST   Most of my playing in the past 53 years has been in Southern Baptist Churches. The one now has an organ and piano and no praise band, and no = intention, for the time being, of getting one. It is a small church with a = membership of 266 and nearly 200 attand Sunday School every Sunday and the Sanctuary is almost full for the service. They are very supportive of the music = program and the music the pianist and I play. When I left Chickasha where I was playing = at a SBC with a formal music program most of the time, I was prepared (even = eager) to play in a liturgical church. But, I go where God sends me and I am = very happy where I am. Lee

I remember hearing a = rendition of BELMONT; a setting of the 23rd Psalm: (The Lord's my Shepherd, I shall not want!") However, for certain portions of this recording, I think the "drones" were all silenced.   Michael Barone described this sound as "galvanizing", and it most = certainly is!   Faithfully,   G.A.   -- Richard Schneider, PRES/CEO <>< Schneider Pipe Organs, Inc. 41-43 Johnston St./P.O. (back) Subject: Re: there's organs, then there's Ruffatti... From: "T.Desiree' Hines" <nicemusica@yahoo.com> Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 20:32:51 -0800 (PST)   okay! Monty got a Rufatti and im proud. I love Ruffatti's they are in my top 5 = favs. i think that Monty clearly states that Friendship is a large church and = needs a large organ. Its a black missionary baptist church that is = racially mixed. Having grown up missionary baptist myself and having = become a pipe oragnist its very dear to me that they would choose such a = fine builder as Ruffatti. Black churches SING! They SANG! Traditional = hymns...they be sangin! Young, old, tuneful, untuneful...sang! First = Baptist congregational here in chicago with the worlds largest enclosed = organ by Kimball, fits a profile very close to Friendship. Large = historically and predom black church that warratns a LOT of organ for the = service. I remember subbing at FBCC here in Chicago....i had to use the = tutti for the last verses. I had FUUUUN! So, since most of the builders = had no experience with anything over 80 ranks, he did right in not = choosing them. And also, what one can say abotu African-American Churches = and organs...even Wayne Barr says thsi in his doctoral dissertation = History of the Pipe Prgan in Black Churches in the US...got to have the best. no short = comings. If theres an enchamade on that organ, can we have 2? And just think...how unprofessional it was for an organ builder to be = racist! Monty clearly states that this builder tossed out the Music = Ministers (whos name i will refrain from saying) card, and probably asked = Monty "are you sure "they" want a pipe organ?" Appearantly, Abyssinian = Baptist NYC, Moorehouse College, Fisk University(with is Holtkamp Senior = organ built in the 50s or 60s) Spellman College, Hampton U, and other fine = historically African Institutions with fine pipe organs did not register = with whomever this...oh dont get me started.   I Think Monty states clearly why Ruffatti was the best choice. James = Abbington will have a field day on it!     From Desiree' T. Desiree' Hines Chicago, IL 60649 http://concertartist.info/bios/hines.html   --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Saved, Sancitfied, and HG filled!   that is how a lot of us oldsters got here. > >dale in florida   I'm going to make a bold statement here....Diane has played to more people = via her TV program than anyone on this list has. She has educated the = general public about the organ. Who cares if she does it while wearing = sequins and gold shoes. She has proved that the organ doesn't have to = sound like a Hammond spinet at a funeral home playing "In the Garden." If = she can attract some young new players, good for her. It's the future of = our instrument. Virgil did the same thing back in his day. I've read stories about = teenagers flocking to his church concerts back in the 50's and 60's, well = before his sold out "Heavy Organ" concerts of the 70's. Yes, there are other great concert artists out there today, but how many = of them are attracting young people to the instrument? How many of them = have such a visual presence? Not many. CJ Sambach does his Organ = Informance programs, but how many others really cater to children? 90% of = organ concerts cater to other trained organists. Listening to recordings of Virgil made me realize how interesting the = organ could be when I was a child. Even then I knew the difference = between academic playing and really making music. (not naming names, but = you all know how I am referring to!) I much preferred Virgil's style--it = excited me. I also would also attend Coral Ridge Church when visiting = family in Ft. Lauderdale so I could hear and see Diane in person. That = was always an exciting experience. She made the organ come to life. As an = aspiring organist, people like that give you something to look forward to, = hoping that someday you will be able to play like that, play an instrument = of that size, play at a large church. It made me work and work hard. The = hard work paid off. Thank you Virgil and Diane, and to the Hammond, Wicks and Murray Harris = organ companies for the instruments I used to practice the tar out of! Monty Bennett     From Desiree' T. Dont you ever paint that picture lol..i know you Beau lol. = You in a dress BEAUUUUUUUUUU!! HAHAHAHAHA Anyway... Yes Diane has soem wonderful arragements. Her organge book is to me the = best of her hymn tunes. I love the Holy God We Praise Thy Name...with all = the trumpetings. And here Collections also arrange the classics in such a = very organistic way. Lady D       From Desiree' T.
