(back) Subject: Possible List Outages From: "Administrator" <admin@pipechat.org> Date: Sat, 29 May 2004 07:07:14 -0500   Good Morning Folks   Over this weekend I am redoing several things with the servers that run here at Pipechat.org. There is a "possibility" of some outages or mail sent to the list being rejected. I am hoping that won't happen but I wanted to give a "Heads Up" in case anyone has any problems.   If you do have a problem that doesn't seem to be resolving itself please send an email to me personally at <david@blackiris.com> with a CC to <dscribner1@earthlink.net> so that I am aware of a problem and work to resolve it.   Hope you all have a great holiday weekend, that is for those of us that are in the US.   Happy PipeChatting   David -- **************************************** David Scribner Owner / Co-Administrator PipeChat   http://www.pipechat.org mailto:admin@pipechat.org

(back) Subject: AIO seminar- a somewhat late comment From: "Andr=E9s G=FCnther" <rgunther@cantv.net> Date: Sat, 29 May 2004 18:27:45 -0400   Andres Gunther rgunther@cantv.net   This year's AIO Seminar was devoted to reed voicing. No fear, I won't = write about technical stuff here although it would be interesting. My jot downs from the Seminar fill several pages. Reed pipes constitute a wide field, = and so many builders/voicers so many opinions and as many things are there to learn. And we learned a lot of things at the Reed Voicing Workshop.   "Keep your hands off the reeds if you aren't an expert!" This was the first advice I got when I started fixing pipe organs. Even later on I treated reeds with the most respect. Now, after the AIO Reed Voicing Workshop, I am able to treat organ reeds with *understanding* respect. Reeds are tricky, but it's no witchcraft in them either. The Seminar saw to that. Four instructors were in charge of showing us the = do's, the dont's, the tricks (both of the reed and the voicer), and the = different ways to do things.   Our instructors were: Patrick Fisher from Fisk, a promising young man in = the field, who introduced us to the voicing of Basson-Hautbois and Cromorne, = and gave an extensive lecture about Channel Resonance in the = Tone-channel/Slider chest and how to remedy it. Thanks, Patrick, and my best wishes for a = long, satisfactory and succesful career in the field!   William Ayers from Dobson was in charge of the Trumpets, and had prepared -at least in my opinion- the best handout of the Seminar. The fundamental knowledge of the art of how to convert a raw noisemaker into a beautiful sounding instrument was tought in the most comprehensive way by Bill.   The third instructor was Eric Johnson, Head Voicer of Quimby Pipe Organs. Eric is rescuing an almost forlorn art: Romantic Style High Pressure = Reeds. The construction principle of these reeds is the same, but the "how to" certainly has significant differences: thick resonator walls; sturdy = "Motor" (Block-shallot-tongue-tuning wire assembly), very thick and weighted tongues, leathered shallots. All these things were wooed and tabooed when = I entered the field! Deafening in the voicing room; glorious in a church: These are HP reed stops, and it's glad to see that they have a comeback, hopefully without falling into the misuse of 'hooters' in the past.   The fourth instructor was Tom Watgen, from Reuter, our hosting organ building firm. Tom is another promising representative of the young generation in our field and the born instructor: he is able to put himself in the shoes of a layman, and to explain. He tought us useful methods on = how to deal when you have to voice great quantities of reeds with a curving maschine. Reuter build their own reed pipes, and the most interesting = thing was Tom's demonstration how to manufacture a shallot.   The most important part of the Reeds Workshop however was the Hands-on practice curving tongues on the block and how to correct quirks that was included in every session. Two tongues are liying in front of me on my = desk as I write this (a basson TC from Patrick's and a HP reed from Eric's workshop), the third tongue remained in a trompette at Bill Ayer's. Are we Reed Voicing Workshop attendants "Reed Experts" now?- I would say: No; but we gained a lot. The idea of the Reed Voicing Workshop wasn't to convert us into reed experts, but give a solid starting knowledge and confidence to recognize a good "Reed-man", a good Reed stop, and to make trouble-shootings when servicing an organ. As a personal notice, the Reed Voicing Workshop was the opportunity for me to see if I have the necessary Ear-Eye-Hand-Feeling coordination that is necessary for reed voicing. I have, and now I am able to fix the darn EE of the 8' trumpet in my parish church's organ (which growls and doubles since ever without any noticeably reason) and to look out for an opportunity to go deeper into this field, hopefully under a Master's guidance.   Of course not all was reeds! I had the opportunity to make new friends, = fell in love with America's Mid-West in May (and was told that the winters are all but lovely). We visited beautiful organs and had a good time. What a pity that the Workshop lasted only two days- the time was rather short = given the extensive field that was thought. This is not meant as critique, and = the reasons for time limit are understandable.   "You've travelled all this way from Venezuela [7 flight hours] only to attend this Seminar? WOW!" was the comment of one of the participants. I assure you, it was worth every minute. Closing this I want to thank the = AIO education Comittee for this new opportunity and excellent organisation of the event; Reuter, the hosting firm, whose new facilities impressed everyone; and of course -again- our four instructors who managed to = transmit so many new knowledges in record time and to convert a "class" into a creative exchange of ideas and experiences.   Congrats, and keep on the good work!   Andres =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D First was the cat, then was the Orgler.
