(back) Subject: Re: PipeChat Digest #4782 - 09/21/04 New music for the organ. From: "John Foss" <harkat@kat.forthnet.gr> Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 13:24:06 +0300   It is difficult to tell at the time of writing which musical paths are taking the main road and may lead somewhere lasting, and which are diversions. Nevertheless, a trip off the beaten track can be fascinating, and may lead to new discoveries. Bach's music was the culmination of an = era, Franck opened a new one. Mendelssohn and Liszt were children of their = time, though their compositions for organ were by no means their only, or even their main, works. The same is true of Hindemith, whose compositions are usually classified as Neo-Baroque. I think there is a modern school of composers for organ, such as Naji Hakim, whose works are of lasting merit. At a recent concert I attended to celebrate the 25th birthday of the = world's largest tracker action organ, the 5 manual instrument by Ronald Sharp in = the Sydney Opera House, an audience of some 3,000 were totally gripped by 20 year old Sarah Kim's performance of the last movement of Hakim's "Hommage = a Igor Stravinsky." But each generation of truly great composers leaves us more music for us = to play. I don't think the French school will be forgotten - it still = provides us with the bulk of the concert repertoire. I have just been looking at Durufle's "Prelude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain" - sonority personified, though little dissonance - this is to be found in the music of Alain. Yes, it ends in a fugue which transforms itself into a toccata. But what a wonderful work both structurally and melodically. I don't think that it matters which school it evolves from. It is divinely inspired music. It = does not "degenerate into a brisk toccata!" It culminates in it!   Colin Mitchell (cmys13085@yahoo.co.uk) wrote:   "Of course, Robert's efforts will take us away from the well worn path of French dissonance and sonority, which has now surely outlived its usefulness?   Of one thing we can be sure, a fugue in the language of Hindemith would not, by necessity, degenerate into a brisk Toccata!!"

From: "Colin Mitchell" <cmys13085@yahoo.co.uk> Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 07:06:59 -0700 (PDT)   Hello,   With all this I would agree......my comment about French music "degenerating into a brisk toccata" was very much tongue in cheek......no other country writes them better!   I shall shorlty be attempting to write down my remarkable improvisation "Khoomeii," which tries to re-create the traditional throat-singing techniques from the Tuvan region and the etherial tones of the Mongolian Cello; all delightfully encapsulated in a modal 12-bar blues accompaniment.   Regards,   Colin Mitchell UK   --- John Foss <harkat@kat.forthnet.gr> wrote:   > It is difficult to tell at the time of writing which > musical paths are > taking the main road and may lead somewhere lasting, > and which are > diversions. (back) Subject: Durufle Franck Edition From: "Beau Surratt" <Beau.Surratt@theatreorgans.com> Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 09:57:53 -0500   Hi! Does anyone have or know where I might obtain a copy of the 1975 Durand Edition of the Franck Chorales edited by Maurice Durufle? I'd like to see the extra markings that Durufle included in this edition. I'd also be interested in the ?Bornemann? Dupre edition as well.     Blessings, Beau Surratt Director of Music and Organist First United Lutheran Church, ELCA 6705 Hohman Ave. Hammond, IN
(back) Subject: Re: "Rockingham" in Mendelssohn 6 last mov't From: <Hell-Concerts@t-online.de> Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 00:29:05 +0200   That's a very interesting observation. I just listened to Rockingham, and indeed, I could recognize something in the final of the 6th. But, even more interesting: in the 3. Variation of the "Vater Unser" tune Mendelssohn seems to utilize in the upper voice the German Christmas tune "Ich steh' an deiner Krippen hier". Can anybody confirm this, or do I interpret simply oo much into this wonderful work? Moyer" <kmoyer@marauder.millersville.edu> To: PipeChat <pipechat@pipechat.org>, <organchat@yahoogroups.com>, <anglican-music@list.stsams.org>   Dear Y'All,   Listening to a broadcast on public radio in Harrisburg PA of Felix Hell's senior recital at Curtis last April, I was intrigued by the announcer's comment that the quiet, closing movement of Mendelssohn sonata 6 utilizes the melody of the "Rockingham" tune. I looked at it, and indeed, the first half of the tune does appear in ever-so-slightly altered manner in Mendelssohn's concluding movement.   Now, I'm really slow at the switch -- that's repeatable! ;-) -- but this was the first I've ever heard this statement. Am I just a slow learner living out here in the PA Dutch boonies of Pennsylvania, or is this new to others who read these lists?   Just curious. And also indebted to the announcer of Felix's Curtis recital recording.   Danke sch=F6n.   Karl E. (back) Subject: homeless as of Oct. 6 From: "Liquescent" <quilisma@cox.net> Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 18:53:04 -0700   Dear Friends,   Well, it finally happened, despite my best efforts. We've fallen further and further behind on the rent since our other two roommates decided to move out. There's simply no way we can bring it current.   The owner has taken over managing the property; He wants $2000 by the 5th to bring it current, or we're out on the 6th.   The management company was giving us a chance to get caught up, and we've both applied for every kind of assistance there is, but it won't happen in time and/or won't be enough.   I have no idea what to do. We've sold everything of value. We have no money to move; we aren't physically able to move ourselves; we have no money for first/last/deposit on a cheaper apartment, even if we could find one (which is doubtful ... this is the beginning of the snow bird season).   I can go to my friends in Ohio, but I'll have to abandon virtually everything except my clothes and a few books. I can't drive a pickup truck across country, even if it would make it; Burgie can't take the winters in Ohio, and he doesn't want to go that far away from his parents.   I'm not sure bailing us out would do any good at this point ... it will just keep happening, at least until I get my Social Security disability, and even then it'll be tight.   I found out yesterday that single men in California can NOT get General Relief OR Food Stamps OR motel vouchers, due to budget cuts, disabled or not ... only families with children.   Thank you for all your help in the past ... please say a prayer for us.   Bud

At least items weighing less than = about 70 lb. As we recently found out when we were wondering how we were going = to ship all the stuff belonging to our twin daughters we couldn't fit in our minivan to take to Smith College.   John Speller
